My father-in-law just got 36 acres, and a Ford 3000 gasser to take care of it. This morning, I was using a six-foot bush hog on some two-foot grass on a big hill. Every time I turned across the side of the hill, the engine bogged down to almost dead. If I managed to get the PTO thrown out and the tractor pointed up-or-downhill fast enough, it speed back up. I made sure there was plenty of gas and the petcock was wide open. Serial number is C185493, didn't see any other numbers on the boss I found the serial on. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Still could have junk in the tank or carb that could be causing it.

low gas.. clogged screen(s)

make any difference if right side was facing uphill, or if right side was facing downhill?

choke make a difference?

original holley carb?

original gas line routing and fuel distrobution setup?

hanging float.. in-op gas pump. Fuel pump was my first guess, I wanted to check with the experts here before my FIL spent money.

low gas.. clogged screen(s)The screen in the tank looks clear, and the only other fuel filter I could find doesn't have a filter in the housing.

test the fuel pump before buying one.. but it's at the top of my list on that setup.

surprising that choke killed it. if it was lack of fuel....

when she's dieing, does she sound gurgly like too rich?.. like flooding?

Actually, it sounds like it's lugging really bad. I'd post RPM's, but the original dash has been replaced by some Wal-Mart gauges, with no tach. It looks like someone did a one-wire allternator swap, so I can't figure out where to put a tach cable. Can I add an automotive type tach? Or will the three cylinder setup throw it way off?

I don't think I have a fuel pressure tester, should I be looking for a steady, strong stream of fuel when I pull the line at the carb?

I didn't mean to ingore your comment, Art. I plan to pull the tank and clean it out, but the carb kinda scares me. I understand that Holley appears to be really finicky.

most fuel pumps that charge a carb a 2-7 psi with 4 being common.

I'd jsut look to see if it was pumping at all.

as for the tach.. there are a couple expensive options to go back mechanical. as for electric.. just get one that will handle your setup with a pickup induction line.

I'll do that as soon as I can get over to his place, thanks.

Sorry this took so long to get back to. Turned out to be rust flakes hiding in the reinforcement groove in the bottom of the tank, blocking the intake screen at certain times. Thanks for the help!
