Hey everyone. my dad snapped the chain on the old 30 ton Warner&swaysey excavator. Looks like its been welded before. My thoughts on repair are:
take the tension off the chain
clean off old welds and gouge a bit for new welds
join chain back together
heat up well
weld with arctic 223xc and cool down slowly

any thoughts? sorry for the bad pics

Got to agree with "cqaigy2", poorly done previous repair.... Good clean up, lot of heat, get good penetration on fill contact area and my guess is it would be good....

If really into fix you may want to disassemble the effected links and get it on bench and do really proper repair, BUT it requires a lot of miserable grunt work with old rusted worn parts and miserable bolts and nut and such... But probably cheaper than getting new chain/links...

Preheat will be a big part of the answer. I would use a temp stick and get it up to 350 degrees (f), get everything down to clean steel, then weld your way back out.

It changes nothing. I am betting a previous owner split the track there. They got is rosie red then beat the pin out. (no track press) It cooled to fast and weakened the link. The link was stretched so they tacked the pin in. Hopefully you changed the track adjuster seal while it was apart. I am betting it's back up and running. Thanks for sharing.
