30 HP Briggs smokes when loaded

I have a brand new 30 HP Briggs 49M977 Engine on a 60 inch Dixie Chopper. When I run into real thick grass and the Engine starts to bog a little, it makes a flapping sound and black smoke comes out the exhaust. The noise sounds similar to a belt slapping. Otherwise it doesn't smoke at all. I mean it shouldn't smoke at all. It's brand new... right?

Anyone have any ideas what this is?

When the engine pulls down, the governor opens calling for more fuel, apparently more then it can burn, if you don't give it a chance to recoup the RPM's. The black smoke is just unburned fuel. Not sure on the new engines if there is accessible carb adjustments, without removing welch plugs to get to them. I know smaller engines have the plugs over the adjustments to keep someone from tweeking on them.

Maybe just try slowing the ground speed when getting into the heavier grass, and let it breathe.

Black smoke from a gas engine means its burning too much fuel. Probably overloaded. Slow your ground speed down.

Thanks guys, that makes me feel a little better. I have already slowed down, but with the 47 different kinds of grass to weeds I have, it's hard to know what grass is going be harder to cut. Then there is the grass that looks sparse, but if you don't go slow, it stands right back up behind you.

Do you know what makes the fluttering sound when it bogs down like that? Is it something to do with the valves?
