Does anyone know off the top of your head what the gear reduction is in a typical rotary tiller that mounts via 3 point hitch? Or similarly does anyone know the typical rotational speed of tiller tines when driven at 540 rpm pto speed? I busted the gear box on my tiller last night. I'm sitting at work pricing out replacement options, and I can't go look at my box to remember if there's a gear reduction and how much.

I'd google the make and model of the tiller to find the spec sheet. On mine it tells you the speeds.

Typically the 3 pt tillers have a 540 RPM input and the rotor will spin somewhere around 220 to 240 RPM. However, they will reduce the speed on the 90 degree gearbox up to a point, then they reduce it further on the chain drive. Most of them do it this way.

I agree with wirlybird. Try to find a manual and go from there.
