When cutting the 17 acres with my Ford 3930 tractor hooked up with my Bush Hog SQ720, making turns tends to make ruts from the rear end of the cutter.

According to Bush Hog owners manual, the telescoping stabilisers are to be hooked up according to tractor owners manual. Ford's manual says stabiliser pins can be inserted in any of the five outer holes to lock the implement (cutter) as a rigid unit to prevent swaying. It also states that under certain conditions, such as plowing, the pins can be inserted in outer middle slot into one of the inner section holes for a limited degree of swaying.

Here's a picture of setup.

Thanks for any advice, tips.

Have you checked your tailwheel assembly? Why do you think the stabilizers are causing your problem?

I would lift the brush hog a little and take some of the weight off of the trail wheel.

I will check the tail wheel assembly as it was recently repaired. As to why I thought that the stabiliser links were the problem, just searching for an answer/reason. I thought maybe in a turn, the bush hog might need more sway to "slide" in the turn rather than move as one rigid unit.

Thanks for replies!

How tight do you run your stabilizers? I find with a rotary mower that leaving a little room for movement allows the mower to adjust to variation in terrain.

I try to set both stabiliser pins in same link hole but sometimes due to mis-managing tractor backup to bush hog, the pins go in slightly different holes. According to manual, that appears to be ok. Reading the tractor manual, I am going to try the "plowing" method which gives a slight amount of sway.

Thanks for response.

Is it the rear end of the cutter that is making the ruts? I can see the front end doing this because it is supposed to run lower than the back end. It would be really helpful to see a picture of how you have it adjusted. If you are making the ruts with the rear then I would adjust the tail wheel so the back end is up 4 - 5" off the ground.

When I run my rotary cutter I have telescoping stabilisers pinned solid so there is no sway.

i like to leave some play for when i hit stumps, hoping to keep some of the shock off the tractor.
