Tractor
to-20 Ferguson and Kubota m5400 with Quickie loader
So I've had trouble searching the forums and I believe it's because I don't know what this is called......

Both tractors I own are older tractors. The 3 point hitch on both, the lift arms are either up or moving up upward, or down or moving downward. There is no way to set the lift arms height at say, half way up, and have it stay there. I would like to set my lift arms at a certain height and have them stay there

What is this called and how could I repair this?

Don't know the answer, but someone probably will.

But, you need to list the make and model of both tractors, so that someone can give you an intelligent answer

Ferguson to-20 and Massey Ferguson 150 .

I'm really only looking for the term for controlling the height of the 3 point lift. Once I know what that's even called I can look into repairing it.

Not familiar with either tractor but do they have both position and draft lift controls? If so they will have two levers for the rear lift. If only one lever then my thoughts will not apply. That sounds like you are using the draft control and not the position control to operate the lift. If you have two lever raise both fully and then with a load on the lift operate a lever slowly down. If it does not move smoothly then raise it back fully up and try the other lever and see if it operates smoothly.

The position lever should lower smoothly where the draft does not. The draft is design to help keep an implement such as a plow level or with same amount of ground engagement while being used. It will raise and lower the implement as the tractor travels over high areas and through a hole. Compact tractors don't think have draft controls on them.

You can buy these support chains and set them for the height you want. The weight will then rest on the chains that attach where the top link pins to the tractor. Neighbor uses these for his old Ferguson.

Also I believe refered to as "check chains" or "limit chains"....

This is also a solution that works for me as my small tractor does not have really good repeatable control....

Yes, position control!! On the to-20 there is no draft control. On the MF 150 there is.....but it may have been Gerry rigged back together. There's a bugger weld on the control shaft, the draft control lever lifts the arms and the 3 point lever does nothing as far as I can tell.

I like the idea of that chain limiter, however I actually need to limit the max lift height as much as the floor.

I’m not completely sure how your models are setup, but if it has a cylinder to raise the 3 point arms, this might work to get full up or down. We had a 560 diesel farmall at one time and that had the position control box swapped to a regular cylinder valve so it worked like raising a disk until the valve went bad. After that it would leak down with on its own after raising it. We eventually got a new position control box and fixed it. It might not be able to do that on yours, but if it has a exposed hydraulic cylinder and remote valves it would work till you got the parts.
