3-Point Hitch 3-Point hitch lever

I recently purchased a Yanmar 2610 and am not very knowledgeable with tractors. My question is when I raise the lever for the 3-pt hitch, it raises fine, however when it is let go it automatically moves down to the lower position. Should this lever stop where I want it to, say in the middle or wherever, or is it suppose to automatically return to the lower position? I know there is a lock knob under the seat, but is this my only option? The lock knob seem like it would be a hassle to use every time, say brush cutting in rough terrain etc. Any info is greatly appreciated.

All Yanmars are not created equal and I am not familiar with your 2610. Some older model like this 2000 has a bolt and spring #57 that holds the lever. Yanmar Tractor Parts: THREE_POINT_CONTROL Other models have bolts that can be snugged where the lever goes through the control housing. Others yet, have double nuts on the control shaft that can be snugged. You should have some way to adjust tension to hold it where you place it.

On my ym2000 the valve looks to be the same atleast in function. All I had to do was put a shorter Tension Spring on and take up the slack from the Linkage wear. On the plunger IN is up so don't prevent it from going all the way out/lower and you should be good. Works for me I did go as far to put the correct washer Nylon and spring on the handle when I bought it and it still done it. With a shorter spring I havent had a problem with it in since.
