Hello All,

Our Kubota has a front loader and a mowing deck, we used the tractor for light excavation work and mowing on our property. The tractor has approximately 200 hours, we purchased it new in the early 2000's, it is a 27HP Diesel.

I was hoping to receive input\recommendations on attaching a 3 point back hoe, the uses would be for occasional digging projects, digging out small stumps here and there. I was seeking recommendations on whether or not it would be a good idea to use a backhoe on the machine since there seems to be some controversy on potential damage to the tractor when using a 3 point back hoe.

If we decided to go through with it, we have a local Kubota dealer that sells equipment, is there any idea on how much the 3 point backhoe would cost me? Could I purchase used?

I appreciate any and all inputs. Thank you!

For all the three point backhoe stories i've seen on here it's probably not good idea on your size tractor. You definitely could buy one used, sized for your tractor and possibly convert to a subframe unit from a manufacturer subframe kit or even make your own subframe.

Just go to your dealer with a credit card and buy a brand new 3PH BH that fits your machine. End of story. If you have to ask here how much the dealer will charge you then you probably dont really need to have a BH.

I have no idea what they cost today. My Woods BH750 3-pt hitch backhoe cost me $2800. Of course that was more than 20 years ago. Used it on my Kubota L4200 up until last year when I sold both together. I had no issues with it damaging my tractor what so ever. This from 20 years of first hand experience. I can also tell you it was great for digging holes and trenches but not for digging out stumps. It lacked power for ripping out the roots.

Yes, sub-frame mounted hoes are much better, but for occasional lighter use, the properly sized 3-point back hoe will get the job done. I initially purchased mine for digging holes when I started my apple orchard and trenching for drain tile.

Talk to your dealer about price. You don't have to buy if you feel it is too expensive for your personal finances. Just guessing price today, around $4000+.

Watch what you get! Many backhoe add on's take away a lot of the ground clearance!!!! Another point is that many are to far back from the tractor and cause excess weight to for leverage while operating the backhoe. Don't get an 8 foot backhoe!

Thanks for the responses everyone.

I called a Kubota dealer that is close by in Upstate NY, gave salesman my tractors info and he looked into it. He told me Kubota no longer manufacturers backhoes for my machine and didn't really have any further recommendations for a backhoe which leads me to a few questions.

Should I be looking for an OEM Kubota backhoe or will I need to purchase aftermarket? I am looking for a complete unit that would attach without having to make serious modifications.

Are all 3 point backhoes compatible with all 3 point hitch setups? Do all backhoe setups require tractor frame modifications or modifications to the aftermarket backhoe?

Appreciate all your inputs!

Ask the dealer if they had a reinforced top link bracket for your unit - those were available for some Kubota tractors using the 4600 series Kubota backhoes. That will help keep your mind at ease if you use a 3 point unit. Then keep your eye open for a Woods 650/750/7500 or equivalent like Prairie Dog, or a Kubota 4520/4530/4672/4690 backhoe. There's also a couple other brands out there, with nice little units but I would say ideally you want one with a self contained hydraulic system. The ones I mentioned are almost all "plug and play" and compatible with your unit without modifications.

Check out a Woods 6500 or 7500, however a minature excavator will be light years faster and much stronger.
