I picked up a used 261 grooming mower with a bad gearbox. I have torn it down and ordered new bearings and seals. The gears look to be in near perfect condition. I am waiting for the parts to come in. I am looking for a diagram or info. on how the gearbox sets up. Now it has shims on the shaft and I am wondering how I need to set it up to run like it should. Thanks

I would think that info would be available at the dealer or maybe online at the dealers website? Ken Sweet

I appreciate the reply. I was just wondering if anyone had done their own overhaul of the gearbox. Wondering what clearances are critical and how to set it up. I have just never done a gearbox and was looking for some input.

Most gearboxes require shimming to provide approx. .003" - .005" endplay in the shaft bearings. Also need to provide .005" - .010" backlash in gears. Specs will vary from gearbox to gearbox, but those specs are a good rule of thumb.

If you assemble it, and you run it, and it gets too warm too touch, it needs more shims. Ken Sweet
