2520 w/72" Deck

Looking at a 2520, just trying to decide whether to go with the 62" DOD or the 72" deck, my dealer tells me they are the same price. I do a lot of commercial grass cutting and the extra 10" will make a difference in efficiency, I'm just concerned it might be to cumbersome, just want to know if anyone else has the 72" deck and how they like it.

The 2520 that I am ordering is going to have the 72" deck. The drive over feature is not a deal breaker for me as I had an old x-series that the deck slid out the side verses driving over. The tractor sleeps in the heated workshop but I plan on taking it into the storage part where I can drop the deck and just slide it out and store it right there when I need to drop the deck.

From what other members have said is that you might run into some scalping issues with the larger deck on uneven ground. Also the non-drive over feature could be an issue for some if they do not have a place to just roll it out.

You dealer will give you either deck for the same price? Here the 72" is more expensive.

Sorry, one dealer says an extra $750 for the 72" deck and the other dealer says it's the same price but he is also $327 more than the first dealer on the whole tractor/loader/mower/blower combo.

Another thing you could do is go on the deere site and view the manuals for both decks and that might help you decide as well.

Once on,will it stay on? If so,I'd go for the larger deck.
But if you're on and off alot of the time,I'd go for the quick and convenient drive over deck. Also,scalping is an issue with the larger decks. Adding 10 more inches and it will be worse. Another consideration,you mentioned efficiency. You can't get much more efficient than a drive over :thumbsup:

Good call, never thought of that, as we also do construction, the deck will be going on and off quite frequently, perhaps this is the better choice.

I have a 2520 with a 62D. I love being able to drop the deck anywhere I want in just a couple minutes. I also have a back injury that causes me to not want to wrestle with a big heavy mowing deck to get it in position under the tractor. The 62D is very simple to hook up, and I think the convenience is worth a great deal.

Is there any tools required when dropping deck? Does deck work off the rear lift or is there a third scv?

No, no tools at all.

The lift mechanism will operate off of the 3PH lift, which Deere calls "mechanical lift". This means that you use the 3PH position control to lift the deck, and adjust the mowing height.

The alternative to that is called "independent lift", and uses a hydraulic cylinder to raise and lower the deck using the curl function of the SCV. The height adjustment is via a mechanical adjuster that limits the downward travel of the lift to set the mowing height.

Which one you choose is a matter of how you plan to use your tractor.

My old Kubota had the 60 inch deck, and dragging it in and out was a pain, so most of the time it stayed on, got a little beat up, but it was sure worth it not having to drag it out and back in. No concrete here, so I had to drag it through gravel and dirt.

While the 62D is easy to get off, my first attempt at getting it back on wasn't so easy, but at least I didn't have to drag it under the tractor.

Hey Greg. when mower deck hooks to draft links is it foward of where you hook up for implements? Or do they hook to link arms themselves?

My first John Deere CUT had the mid mount mower that was lifted by some extensions from the 3-point draft arms. It worked OK for a while. But then my habits changed, as I started to use a landscape rake and added hydraulic top and tilt. The tilt allowed the rake to actually do what I call "landscaping", when you are digging at an angle other than that which the tractor is setting on, such as cutting or grooming a trail into a hillside, which ends up fairly level. So anyway, once I started doing that stuff, when I'd put on the mower the mower would also be all tilted, so I would park on a level area, and adjust the sidelink to make the mower about level. But it never was exactly right, and changed over time to due settling. So I guess my opinion is if you are planning on using a hyd sidelink, or doing any landscaping work that involves changing the mechanical turnbuckle sidelink, get the independent mower lift.
