I have a new 3203 that is kept in a heated garage and it even sounds a little louder with a puff of black on start up but it only lasts for a few seconds.(the nature of a diesel, I wasn't at all woried.) Even though it is kept at a good(70 F temp), it still takes a minute to get to actual operating temp and it's ready to go....my 2 cents

My little 2210 rattles quite loudly at first esp at 10 degrees or colder at which point I use the block heater. If I remember to plug in the block heater ( or the weatherman accurately predicts snow and I plug it in believing I'll use it) then the little diesel starts just like it's 100 degrees outside.
When cold starting without the block heater I glow the plugs a few secs then start at idle until it starts to quiet down a bit (5 seconds or so) then gradually increase rpm's. I listen for the rattle as I increase the speed keeping it on the verge of rattling until I get to 2000, then let it sit and warm up about 5 minutes if it's really cold. The loud rattling is normal for diesels of this type , though I'm not sure if it's harmful or not.

You probably had JDM J20C HY-GARD in the tractor when you experienced the problem...It's temperature range is a little above 14F to 122F...

You should switch to JDM J20D LOW VISCOSITY HY-GARD...Its temperature range is -40F to 122F...

Important note: If air temperature falls below -40F, you need to heat the fluid to at least 5 degrees above -40F before startup or transmission damage may occur...
