The bottom line is that bigger, faster and more powerful don’t necessarily equate to ‘better’.
Get the tractor that will do what you need and that means assessing your needs completely before you buy a tractor. Buying a tractor that will move mountains is a waste of time, fuel and money when all you’re moving is mole hills.

This statement nails it. This is precisely the reason I chose a 2320 over the 2305 or 2520.

A think you left a really of your answer. Shouldn't that read?

Really, really, really little.

Only kidding. Look at it this way, someone with an Agway garden tractor is going to see them as really, really, really big tires.

By the way, here's a tip if you folks want to know if a garden tractor has any 'beef'.

Look at the rear tires if they are bolted to a hub they're made to do something. If they're keyed to a shaft don't expect more than a mower with a seat.

Cars are a little harder to figure out. I had this friend Eddie when I was growing up who thought his father's Pontiac station wagon was "hot". He took it up to Dover Drag strip and got beat into the ground. Not happy Eddie decided to ‘boost’ his chances by throwing a little nitro methane into the tank. It ran like a bat out of h*ll and he almost won his class ( he got beat by a bigger cheater who switched the 326 in his Tempest with one from a 389 GTO. Same blocks).

Eddie, the little achiever he was, kept running it on nitro until he finally beat someone a few weeks later.

Anyway a couple of months go by and Eddie's dad is at the dealer raising h*ll because the valves are burnt to a crisp on his new wagon with 1500 miles on it and it runs like piss.

The dealer, wishing to keep a solid customer who bought a new car every third year, replaced the engine.

Good old Eddie was back at Dover next week to break that new engine in just right.

For a while, I thought a three range hydro would be nice too. But, then after thinking a bit, it really could just use a bit more power for hills.

On my driveway hill, the engine bogs down if I try to go too fast. To get the most power, one needs to keep the rpms up to get the most power. So, if you press too far and the rpms drop to say 2000 rpm, it is better to back off until the rpms go back up to 2400 to 2500 rpms. You will go faster then, but certainly not at max speed. At this point, it doesn't really matter whether you have a mid range gear or not, you will not go any faster than the power vs weight vs slope allows anyway...

Mine can really fly going down hill, maybe even 20. But, I don't. Going back up, it takes more power to do any decent speed. Sometimes it is just more comfortable to just use low and press the pedal to the floor rather than trying to find the pedal sweet spot in high.

One other thing you guys may want to be aware of: I discovered today that it is safer to go forward down steep hills rather than backward. With all the fire danger around here, I got the courage to mow some of the brush that is on a 30 to 35 degree (70%) slope. On some sections that I have mowed, I found it was best to mow backwards because it backs up to basically a cliff perhaps 4 to 8 ft high. But, on this steeper section, I basically could only use the brakes, not much forward pedal. I could push the pedal forward about half way before any sort of engagement! Also, my steering almost became useless. It seemed like I could turn the steering wheel but no front wheel response. Fortunately, on this section there was an out near the bottom other than a cliff. I went around and did the same slope going forward (downhill) and it had plenty of HST and steering response. It could also climb the hill quite well backwards until it looses traction.

So, you can get yourself in trouble especially with low fluid going up a steep slope...

Hay Skidoo, we thought you fell off the earth.

The shed is in! But more work still needs to be done... It still needs paint, need more bricks for a retaining wall nearby, need to backfill the wall, need to do a final smooth and re-seed. Need to finish paint on the side of the house. But, first priority, reduce the fire danger... It has been the hottest July on record. The Forest is very dry. Priorities change as the weather and seasons evolve...

I'll post some pictures when I can....

Good Lord!! That's a lot of work left to be calling it "in"!!! :)

Agree with the weather priorities, though. I gave up on finishing my brick patio until it cools off enough to be 'seasonable'...

The heat has not bothered me so much. It's been a nice break from the cold. But, its now fire season. The closest fire is 50 miles away, but they can start in an instant by lightning or whatever. A week and a half ago, I drove to see that fire from the closest highway. I could see the flames on the ridge far away. I had heard that the air tanker crew reported seeing flames as much as 500 feet in the air!!

I am in no immediate danger. But, to keep it as low as possible, I have to get as much brush cut down, limb the trees up high, mow the grass, and keep it watered. Fortunately, I have irrigation on the property... Here is a picture of my place...

Nicely into the woods, I see... Are you in the Michigan UP? There's a serious fire going on up there...
