i have a 24t baler that started making small bales after i sheared the flywheel pin . it worked fine before that. i noticed that it trips only half way up the measuring arm. i think its something with the trip dog or the release lever. also the plungerhead safety stop dosent fall down sometimes and the plungerhead hits it and shears the flywheel pin, thats what started this whole ordeal. i retimed the baler the best that i could and it still shears the pin. any help.

I am thinking the knotter brake could be causing both problems. The needles will enter the chamber too soon if the brake isn't holding tight enough. Try tightening the bolts going through the brake pads and springs. #25 and 26

i would recommend turning it by hand best done w/ 2 people and watch it carefully to see whats happening, i def wouldn't run it on the pto until you know for sure whats going on you don't want to shear a flywheel bolt and have the needles get ruined. how does the needle brake look? last yr i had a similar issue w/ my 24t and we ended up having to put a new brake and springs in as well as the spring #33 in the above diagram which was another issue all together. how do your hay dogs look and are they sticking? could also be part of the issue. i try to keep up on all the maint on my baler as i don't want to be stuck w/ weather coming in, but these are old machines and need some tinkering from time to time. give it sometime and get it figured out as the 24t is a reliable machine.
The trip dog on the knotter main drive clutch has been moved, bent or worn so that its on the very edge of tripping the knotter cycle. That's the arm that sits on the dog clutch release. When it pulls off, the knotter cycles. Hit a bump in the present condition it will also cycle.
Empty the baler and clean it out with a leaf blower. Then look underneath and clean all the crud out of the channels that the plunger stops ride in with a putty knife or a wide blade. Check the spring tensions in the stops while you are at it. If there is a lot of dirt, mud, chaff or stones in the plunger stop guides, they won't sit in their idle positions. You can temporarily use truck tiedown straps to give the plunger stops some extra retention.

i had someone drive the tractor while i watched the baler , seemed like the release lever moved faster than it should . the measuring arm would move up it small increments has the release lever against the trip dog moved faster and would trip only half way up the measuring arm . i tightned the brake springs up and still the same sort bales. is the trip dog supposed to move up and down as the cam spins around? the lift link mounting hole has some slop in it , would that affect the needle movement plus the plungerhead stop?
