New Holland Powerstar 75
Hi, I have been looking to possibly purchase a New Holland T4.75 cab tractor. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the 24mph transmissions? I currently have a T4030 with a 12x12 20mph transmission. I am comfortable with the gearing and what gears to use in certain scenarios such as baling heavy hay vs light hay, tedding, brush hogging steep ground, etc.. I do travel to another farm approximately 15 miles one way, a couple times a year. There is only about a 5 mile stretch that is highway where you could entertain traveling 24 mph, otherwise you can only hit 20 mph in a few places.

My question is; is the gearing completely different or is it pretty much just high range where the difference is? Would the extra speed really be a benefit or not? The reason I am asking is, my dealer has located a tractor with the exact options that I want except the transmission is the 24mph one. The price is good I believe. I just don't know if I should let it be a deal breaker or not. I would rarely ever go over 20mph as 20 can get squirrelly if the road isn't perfectly smooth, but it would be sweet if you ever needed it. I'm confused lol.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Going the 15 miles with either transmission will not make that much difference in time. With the 20mph tranny it will take 45 minutes. With the 24mph tranny - 37 minutes.

Eight ( 8 ) minutes difference. I hope you aren't buying the new tractor just to save eight minutes.

He's looking at a tractor that has all the other features desired, not sure if the higher gear trans should be a deal-breaker...

Myself, I'd go for it, and adapt as needed, learn the new gear to use, etc...

My backhoe will go that fast but it bounces too bad to do it. Most off road machines have pretty lousy steering trying to go fast.

This.

I'm not good at clarifying myself. I personally don't see the need for a 24mph tranny. too spooky at times to go that fast on a tractor. I was just wondering if, other than high range, the gearing was the same. I am just trying to decide whether to go for this one or hold out to find one with a standard 12x12. this one has all of the other options I would like to have.

How many gears does the “24mph” trans have? My personal preference is buying all the gearing you can if it’s in a useful range for your tasks.

that should depend on what size animal is chasing you!. there's some you'd rather not have bite you!. I don't see any drawback to having a transmission that CAN go a bit faster in high gear!..

I have a T4.75 with the 24 mph road gear. I did not special order it. It was a tractor we found at another dealer. The speeds are almost the same in other gears that you can not tell the difference. The speeds are listed in the sales literature and the owners manual. If the rest of the tractor is optioned like you want go for it. Mine has most of the options available and I love it so far.

Thanks! I did call my dealer today and he didn't know so he did some research. He said the same as you. The lower gears are very close and wouldn't be noticed. The higher gears is where most of the difference is. I believe I will probably pull the trigger and get a root/brush grapple to boot.
