Valve Clearance Adjustment
Reason:
To maintain proper clearance between valves and rocker
arms for maximum compression and valve train life.
Equipment:
Feeler Gauge
10 mm Box End Wrench
Flat Blade Screwdriver
17 mm Wrench
Procedure:
1. Park machine safely. See 撤ark Machine Safely on
page 3 " in the Safety section.
2. Engine must be cool (room temperature) before valve
clearance is checked.
3. Open hood.
4. Be sure ignition key is OFF before attempting to turn
engine by hand.
5. Remove air cleaner assembly and bracket.
6. Remove rocker arm cover.
Note: “Top Dead Center (TDC)” is when the piston is at
it’s highest point of travel in the cylinder on the
compression stroke. Number one cylinder is located at
rear of engine (flywheel side).
7. Locate timing marks on the flywheel on the right side of
the engine behind the fuel filter.
8. Turn the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation
(counterclockwise). Align number one (A) TDC mark on the
flywheel (B) with timing mark on flywheel guard (C).
Note: When number 1 top dead center mark (B) is
reached, the rocker arms for the number 1 cylinder will
be motionless as the crankshaft is rotated. If rocker
arms are still moving when TDC is approached, rotate
crankshaft one full revolution and try again.
9. Try to move rocker arms and/or push rods for number 1
cylinder:
If rocker arm and push rod are loose, the piston is at
TDC on the compression stroke and you may proceed to
step 11.
If rocker arms and/or push rods are not loose, rotate
flywheel one revolution (360ー), and recheck rocker arm
and push rods.

10.Measure and adjust valve clearance only on the four
valves indicated above with black arrows while number 1
piston is at TDC on compression stroke.
11.Slide feeler gauge between valve cap (C) and rocker
arm to measure clearance.

12.To adjust valves, loosen lock nut (D) and turn adjusting
screw (E) until blade of feeler gauge can be inserted
between rocker arm and valve cap. Turn adjusting screw to
obtain a slight drag on feeler gage. Hold adjusting screw
while tightening lock nut.
13.Recheck valve clearance after tightening lock nut.
valve cap
14.Check that valve cap (F) on end of valve stem remained
seated on valve and inside valve spring retainer.
15.Turn crankshaft pulley one revolution (360ー) to the
number 1 TDC mark again. This puts the piston in number
1 cylinder at TDC on the exhaust stroke.
16.Measure and adjust valve clearance on the last two
valves (black arrows) with number 1 piston at TDC of
exhaust stroke.
17.Install rocker arm cover and bolts to specification.
18.Install air cleaner bracket and air cleaner.
