Is the second coil part of the solenoid assy? In other words, are there two separate coils with two separate P/N's or is it one complete module? How hard is it to replace?
One solenoid device with two coils in it. davkir provided good troubleshooting information. The pull-in (high current) coil is just active long enough for the hold (low current) coil to latch in the solenoid. You can watch the solenoid position to see when it is engaged. If it is not engaged you can manually pull on the solenoid rod to to engage it to see if the engine will run. Again, if it is engaged, just a moment of power loss such as from a poor electrical connection will cause it to drop out. It will not reengage until the pull-in coil is cycled again by turning the key off and back on.
