I have a JD 2305. 2007 model. Has run flawless for 8 years all maintenance up to date. Have been using it on a garden project but that got put on hold about 2 weeks ago as had to have my appendix out. Went to start it today and cranks catches for a second then dies. Any ideas?

Battery connections at cable ends, or dead battery (for starters... no pun intended

You may also want to look at this post. Thread 5 of this post has a wiring diagram and thread 8 has a page from a manual on how things work. While the V4 diode maybe bad it also speaks to why the diode maybe losing power due to a safety switch issue.
