2305 50hr service - Any suggestions

My 2010 2305 is ready for it's 50hr service which I plan to do myself. I noticed on another thread that the oil filter can be a pain and a snap-on channel lock type wrench works great. Are there any other recommendations for making the 50hr service easier? I think while it's in warranty I'm going to use only JD parts and fluids.

50hr: Change engine oil/filter, change transmission oil/filter, clean suction screen.

On a side note.. I did the first oil change on my Toyota Matrix (got it for the gas mileage as I drive a lot) and found out I needed a special 64mm socket to remove the oil filter housing (has a paper filter). After looking around I settled on the Assenmacher metal socket for Toyota that I found online from Advance Auto.. part number ASSTOY640.. :laughing:

My suggestion is to stop at an Auto Supply House, O'Riley, Advance, AutoZone and obtain a needle injection tip with at least a 4-5 inch extension for your grease gun. The drive shaft from the engine to the transmisson has a grease fitting CONCEALED in both of the U-Joints. You will need the needle injection system to get grease into the grease zerks. Several have posted on here about the u-joint breaking and damaging the tractor. (This is when they found out about the grease zerk and were warning others) Getting grease into the u-joints will be the hardest and most time comsuming part of the service.

I would not pass on greasing the u-joints.

I found the information the Tractorbynet poster provided. You need a alemite B6783 5" inch needle nose adapter. Look to pay 20-25 dollars for this tool.

I recently did mine. It's pretty simple. The suction screen can be a bit tricky to wiggle in and out of the trans. The o-rings that provide the seal are stubborn to get moving and there's not a ton of room for both hands AND to see what you're doing.

FYI - you can find that style filter wrench at Tractor Supply also.

I feel your pain about the Toyota filter. I have a 2010 Tundra that requires removal of a skid plate, and that special tool. Fun.

Gator- Thanks for the tips.. I'll have to get one of the zerk adapters. I see what you mean about them being hidden. When I first looked I thought "there's no zerk here..."

Ironhand - See what you mean about the suction screen. Getting the hose off/on was tricky. Too tight to push it up/down or over. Ended up twisting the suction screen cover ~45 degrees till the hose twisted off.. the did the opposite to get the hose on. I like the F4 pic.. Used to love to hear those things rumble..

Oh.. and just for grins I asked the dealer what they would charge for the 50hr service.. First answer was 4hrs at $70 +parts... I said WHAT? Then he said he guessed they could do it in 2hrs +parts.. I think it took me about 2 hours and it was my first time...

Be sure to tighten all fasteners as well.I found alot of loose ones when I did the 50 hr on my 748.I took alot of them out and gave them a coat of blue locktight.
