2301 voltage regulator

The Mickey Mouse regulator on my 2301 is dead and needs replacing. From what I've been reading, these things are somewhat less than reliable and die frequently. If this is the case, I'd rather find an alternative to buying one for 82 bucks. Anyone have a better idea? Thanks...

There's been several threads on replacing the Yanmar alternator with a internally regulated alternator. Do a forum search with keywords "delco alternator" and you should find several threads/posts from people who have been down that road.

I'm going to look real seriously at doing the replacement if/when my 2220 regulator fails a third time.

Well, I ain't no brain surgeon, but I'm smart enough to figure out that $99 for a brand new internally regulated 1 wire alternator is better than $82 for a Mickey Mouse regulator with 3 bucks worth of parts in it. So, I ordered one from Rare Electronics, got it today and adapted it to the Yanmar. It's a little bit of a challenge, given the location of the radiator and bypass hoses, but it can be done. Seems to work great. After I clean up the bracketry, I'm going to post the pics on my website in case anyone else wants to try it. My engine is a 3T84H. I highly recommend this modification.
