The nicest Mossberg that I have it the 44US.
Very cool, that is a nice one. I have one but I think it was a CMP re-arsenal, it's missing the front sight and they're very proud of a replacement. They used them to teach the troops to shoot before handing them a Garand. Is yours black or is it Parkerized?

Mike,
mine is blued. It is really an unusual piece, as it was never beat up. Just a few small handling marks in the wood and all the bluing intact. Original correct peep sights. Practically in mint condition. I would guess that there aren't many that still look like this one does after 70 years.
I bought it several years ago from a collector. And, let's just say, it's the most expensive Mossberg I have.

There were tons of these rifles released to the public after the war, some issued and some not. Plus, I remember seeing ads for them in magazines when I was a kid... check the price!! They weren't US government issue but still a fine rifle.

Mine is blued as well but my buddy has one that is Parkerized. He said it was manufactured after the war (50's) and the finish was a marketing strategy... can't confirm that.

Yeah, mine too. Being a piece of history made it worth what I had to give for it. It is a Mossberg 22, but it's in a different class from the rest of the herd because of that.

Does your have the S101 flip sight? I think that's what come as standard.

Mine has the Lyman 57MS rear, Lyman 17a front.

It was obviously never actually used as a trainer, but is US property marked. Date of manufacture on mine is 1943. It is the first model, and as such, it does not have the adjustable trigger of the later models. It wasn't drilled and tapped for scope mounts either.

What are you guys shooting in them?

At the large Portland OR gun show this weekend, I only saw one seller with 22LR. Price was $55 for 500. CCI boxes of 100 were $19 each, IIRC.

Not one of the regular dealers I visit around here has any.

Can't speak for anyone else, but I have plenty on hand.
I didn't just start buying .22lr ammo last year. Been buying it a long, long time. And, not just a box or two. I used to buy a case or two at a time, back when you could do that sort of thing.
It's sad now. The online suppliers are usually just "out of stock, no backorder" and the big box stores just don't have any on the shelf. Last time I went to Academy, they had a few, but it was a two box limit IIRC.

Hopefully, it will become available again. If so, I'll start replacing what I've shot up during the shortage.

Anyone have one of the little Browning take-down .22 auto? They are a sweet shooting little rifle.

The only thing stopping a 22lr rifle from working is not being able to get ammo. Best all around caliber ever made.

They put a lot of meat on the table. I still have my little pre-war RemingtonTargetmaster single shot that my Mom gave me in 1951.

I was wondering about Remington because the name doesn't come up in discussions like these very often...
