Any suggestions on how to approach this problem? I noticed some leaking from the mid pto shaft area last night after "mowing" the fields with the LX4 cutter (the 62" mower deck was also in place, but not in use). There appears to be a very slow, but consistent drip from the bottom of the mid pto shaft (I have taken off the mower deck). After looking on JDParts, I can't tell if there is some kind of rubber gasket/seal on the this shaft-it appears to have only bearings and sleeves. Any other leaking 2210's. About 150 hours now.
Thanks,
B8fish

Don't know what is leaking, but also can't understand mowing with a 4' rotary cutter with a 62" MMM deck hanging with just a few inches clearance beneath the belly. Just don't understand how that could work. Maybe you hit something?

I would approach it by talking with the dealer.

yeah, I know. I am pretty sure I didn't hit anything--this is a 2 acre field that gets "hogged" about once amonth, so it is mostly just taller grass and weeds. I take the mower deck off for the serious tree/sapling/climbing vine/locust bush brush hogging.

How about warrenty? How long have you had the tractor?

I've owned this machine for about 2 years now--this is the first "issue" I have had. I keep wondering if it's possible that "something" got into the shaft/bearing area that the fluid is getting by, and it will eventually get ground up if I run the mid pto for awhile, but thought I'd check it out here first. Also wonder if the last bearing on the shaft is tapped into place, or sealed from the inside of the housing--I couldn't tell from the parts diagram.
Thanks

I've heard of some problems with things wrapping around the PTO shaft and wearing on the seal. Maybe that happened here, and something like string, wire, or just grass wrapped up on it. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Maybe this picture will help you out. If you have oil dripping from mid pto you need a new seal. My father in laws 2210 seal started leaking at around 260 hrs, after raping a piece of baling wirer round the shaft. He replaced the seal and all was dry around the shaft again.

I don't know if they are the same as the 755's or not but my pto started dripping and it was a major ordeal. The tractor had to split into to replace the seal. The cost was around $550 to fix it. I just had that done in the spring and I noticed a small spot of oil under it last week, so I called the dealer and they told me they would take care of it. The 2210 maybe completely different.

Someone else posted here who had a leak from his mid PTO seal on his 4100 or 4010. Search to see if you can find anything there. I start and run my mid PTO every once in a while to lubricate the seal on it.

I had an axle seal leak on my Gravely that has virtually stopped after changing the fluid in the trans. Had seal slinging on my power steering pump on the old Benz. Changed the fluid on it. No more leakage. Same with trans and diff seal slinging on it. Changed fluid and no leakage. I'd try changing out your hydraulic fluid first, maybe after trying just running the PTO. These fluids generally all have seal swell additives that get worn out.

My 4010 had a metal cover over the mid PTO that I found lying in the brush. Can't figure how to put it on yet. Just set it aside and keep forgetting to try it again.

Thanks for the comments on the seal--the pic really helped. I am guessing that it was the seal causing the leak. Will be contacting the dealer tomorrow.
Thanks,

Ha that could be me! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

The mid PTO (or at least somewhere close to it) started to leak a week or two after I got my 4110. I called my dealer, and he came to pick it up and did the work under wanrraty. He told me they had to split the tractor in half to fix it! It took a week to get my tractor back /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

So far it has not leaked again!

Well, the dealer will be picking up this afternoon. They had not had any other 2210's with leaks. I'll update with the results.

I have seen weeds etc from running an LX4 get wrapped around the MFWD shaft, and take out the seal on the transmission end. With your mower deck on, I doubt that would happen, and it sounds like you have looked at it already. Sometimes seals aren't seated properly and maybe
it took a while for yours to show up. Have you done quite a bit of mowing with the MMM?

I dropped off my 755 today and the service manager told me that sometimes they knick the seal when they put it back together and it will start leaking soon. I will find out in a few days. I'm glad it's on them this time.

I would guesstimate that about 75 hours were spent mowing with mmm over the last 2 years. My 24 month warranty would have run out in mid-October, so I guess I am lucky that this leak showed itself now, and not in another month or so!

The dealer called--it was the seal. They had to order the part, should be in tomorrow and good to go! Thanks for all the information.

I talked to my dealer today and he said it was the seal leaking again. He said he believes my pto shaft on the mmm is worn and causing a vibration that is wearing out the seal. Does that make any sense to anyone else?

Worn? I doubt it! Unless the U-joints are REAL sloppy.
Out of ballance from the factory seems like a better bet to me.

Well I got my tractor back today and the service manager is sticking to his story that the mmm pto shaft is worn and causing the seal to go out. The pto shaft is $265. I guess that is their way of getting some money out me. I still don't believe that is causing the seal to go out. He said if I don't replace the shaft and the seal starts leaking again they won't fix next time, so I guess they have me over a barrel.
