If anyone has changed the front diff oil, can you tell me where the drain plug is located, because mine doesn't have one.

Thanks, Rod.

reich,

I've changed mine and there were two plugs near each wheel that you need to open to let the fluid drain out. If you check, I did a post on when I changed mine, I found some water inside, and belive it to be from condensation from using it in the winter. I changed mine at 100 hrs and would recommend all that use their 2210's in the winter to do the same. Seems like cheap insurance.

If you need, let me know and I'll take some pics. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I saw those bolts but there would still be oil in the pot of the diff. because it's lower than the axle housing. I would imagine that the remaining oil would have to be sucked out. Not sure though.

<font color="green">Didn't your 2210 come with an operator's manual? There are three plugs as shown at this link one labeled A and two labeled B.

The manual is available online at this URL with the relevant instructions found below. I too was surprised like JDFANATIC at how much water was present in the oil when I changed mine.

Best advice is to change it often.

Mike

Changing Front Axle Oil - 2210

1. Operate machine to warm front axle oil.

2. Park machine safely. (See Parking Safely in the SAFETY section.)

3. Position drain pan under differential drain plug (A).

NOTE: For draining purposes, front axle contains approximately 2.5 L (2.6 qt) of oil.

4. Remove differential drain plug and allow oil to drain.

5. Position drain pan under axle drain plug (B) on both sides of front axle.

6. Remove axle drain plugs and allow oil drain.

7. Install and tighten drain plugs (A) and (B) after all oil has drained.

8. Remove dipstick located on right side of front axle.

9. Add approximately 2.5 L (2.6 qt) GL-5 Gear Lubricant®-SAE 80W-90 or equivalent through dipstick fill opening until oil level is correct.

10. Install and tighten dipstick.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Allow oil one hour to settle before checking level to ensure accurate dipstick reading. Repeat oil level check after several hours of operation.

11. Check front axle oil level.

mhalla,

That's right, I was going by memory -- and that is a scary thing! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Question for those who found water in the front axle; Do you keep your tractor in a heated garage in winter? seems to me that condensation would require a warm differential in a cold environment?

megotractor,

My shed isn't heated, but it is much warmer than ambient. JohnDeere2210 and I were chatting about this, and, we chalked it up to the MFWD axle getting hot during use. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I just changed my diff oil and no water was detected. I keep my tractor in my garage where it is heated only when I work in it.

reich,

That is good. Not all of the posters here who have changed their fluids have detected this moisture, but those of us that have are glad we did; you now have peace of mind. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

<font color="green">Megotatractor,

My 2210 sits in an unheated shed. I thought water might be getting in when I wash my tractor. Not sure how the front differential is vented???
