The maintenance schedule says that at 500 hours we are due to adjust valve lash (I have studied the procedure and plan to do this myself) and "inspect fuel injectors"? I'm not a diesel mechanic but what is there to "inspect" about an injector? Are they talking eyeball inspection or some kind of measurement of it's performance on some kind of injector cleaning machine? Are diesel fuel injectors required to actually be replaced at some point ever so often?? I would think as long as the machine starts, runs smoothly, doesn't smoke, the injectors are working? I add a little injector cleaner to the fuel occasionally. As I approach 500 hours- now at 440 hours- I notice a little more black smoke sometimes.

They are talking about spray pattern and pop-off pressure. I would not worry about it until it run rough...

That's about what I thought. I was just mowing some very heavy grass tonight and thinking she's running stronger than she ever has, that occasional puff of black smoke is just saying she's working hard.
