22 rifles

This is a basic rifle, but very affordable. New Remington 597 auto with scope for about $179-189. I picked the drab green plastic stock. There are various colors of stocks, barrell finishes etc. I am old fashonioned so all of you can not bother to explain all the various synthetics and their attributes. To me a stock is either solid wood, plastic or plywood.

I keep mine in a case mounted on the Gator. The nice thing is that you can buy new 30 round magazines for it. 22's are great for when guests come up to the cabin. They can shoot a brick of 500 rounds and it costs me less than $10.

There are lots of fine 22's out there for under $250. You will get lots of advice and probably 99% of it will be good advice.

I also have a Ruger 10/22. Great gun. Fires well and probably one of the most common 22 rifles available. There is almost a cult following with this rifle. Check out internet sites and some people take the basic gun to the extreme in target practice and scopes. Lots of custom mods made for this gun. There are web sites just devoted to this model.

A few years ago I bought my nephew a marlin 925, a 20" (maybe a 22") sporter barrel with hardwood stock and it shoots awesome. I took my nephews gun and lightened the trigger and worked on the stock a little to free float it and it shoots like a dream.
I had it shooting so well I tried to buy it from him or trade my 10/22 to him for it but he wouldn't do it. So I bought a 925, replaced the factory spring with a lighter one, sanded the inside of the stock forward the barrel lug and topped it with a Banner 3-9X40MD with the bullet drop compensator. I can slide a credit card between the sides of the barrel and the stock all the way to the barrel lug, it will shoot sub MOA groups at 100 yards with the right ammo.
I have almost $250 in the rig (gun, scope, mounts) total.

I'm still looking at Henry .22 rifles... Mayby I watched too many reruns of Hoss, Ben, Little Joe and Adam... OOps... Candy too. Just like the Brass receivers.

I've got a Henry Golden Boy 22 with the octagon barrel. Had it about two years now, got it home, fired it 5 or 6 times, cleaned it and put it back in the box with all the original stuff. Once a month or so I take it out and clean it and put it away again. I won the rifle at a Quail Forever banquet and it has the logo etched in the side, probably not worth anymore than any other golden boy but for some reason I just don't want to shoot it much.

About the neatest .22 semi [ auto ] I have ever seen is a French make that fired from an open bolt position. I cannot remember the name but it was a very nice little rifle. If I recall it had a staggered 8 shot clip. :D

It was not functioning properly as a semi and four shots would sound like one. It surely made a mess of gophers. [Richardson's ground squirrels]:D

My Father took it out for a trial shoot and chewed me out for only putting two shells in the clip before he left??:D It was a full clip!:D

Like the fool I am I returned it for a Winchester model 57? semi auto with clip. I still have that .22 but it does misfire and fail to eject the odd spent cartridge. Someday I may get down to a serious overhaul but as it has more than one or two little items in it's action it may have to go to a gun shop.:D

Ruger 10/22 here as well.
Dean and I do about 100 rounds a week, just flat out fun.

The carbine was about $200 yesterday and the stainless rifle was $230 in Wally World.

Anyone have suggestions for "games" (not a good word to use with guns I know) but maybe "contests of shooting skill" that my son and I could play back and forth? We have some spinners, and target stands at the range.

Mostly it is, "call the shot" but trying to come up with something to "score" but want something more varied then straight target stuff.

+1 for 10/22. It was the first rifle ever and the first gun I bought in US:) Shoots great and as far as accessories and aftermarkets it is second only to .45 1911.

And shameless plug. I had a chance to play with CZ 452 CZ Model 452 and 513 Rifles and it is one sweet rifle; but remember, I am biased :D

The 4H shooting program up here has a few CZ's in 22lr. Very very sweet shooter! the bolt action came with a 6 round mag I think, and also a blank for using as a single shot.

Also the first rifle I ever bought, and the only one I still own 27 years later.
As already mentioned tons of really nice accessories available. One thing not mentioned, is that for a semi auto .22, it is obnoxiously easy to clean. You only need a standard blade screwdriver to get the barreled action out of the stock. After that, there are 2 large pins that hold the upper and lower receier together. and two smaller pins that hold the trigger and spring assembly in the lower. I can have mine completely striped to bare components with just that standard screwdriver in a minute or two... That is one of the things I have always liked about Ruger. Very practical designs.
