22 pistol recomendations?

I recently started shooting 22 pistol with my 13 and 14 y/o boys. Use a Ruger Mark III. The Ruger Mark II and III's are a PIA to clean. Not easy to take apart and reasemble. The II is a little worse than the III from what I have read/heard. I have heard of enough horror stories and never even tried to take it down completely. Maybe too nervous to try. It is the only gun/pistol that I just use Gun Scrubber on to clean the internals. I bought a new, III 22/45 version last year, with 5" fluted bull barrel, stainless steel, exchangable glow sites and picatinny rail for $250. I thought that was a bargain. I have heard of some brands of 22 ammo not consistently firing through a Mark II or III. So far I have only used CCI mini mags and have had 0 misfires in 750rounds and most shooters say it is the best ammo for the Rugers. Some day, I will try the cheaper ammo. The Ruger Mark 22's are not a gun I would want to carry around all day. A bit heavy and bulky but is probably the #1 target 22 pistol. Just like the Ruger 10/22 is the #1 rifle.

The one they will be really glad they have when they are 60 years old is the Single Six. It will teach them to value each shot, and keep them from blowing holes in your pocketbook when they are teenagers. :)

Over on the ar15 forum 99.9% of the time if someone post "i need help with my Ruger Mark #" as the subject, its followed by "i took it apart and cant get it back together"

I have cleaned my Mark II probably at least 100 times. full strip down, It is not hard.. Nowhere near as tedious as a Colt Woodsman:laughing::laughing:

Of course you can get by for a long time with just gun scrubber and and a bore snake with hoppes, for the chamber and barrel. There is one little part on the other end of the fireing pin return spring, that may puzzle you for a bit. Just pay attention, when you remove the firing pin. The recoil spring is captive, and the main spring is too in the "swinging backstrap" you would profit from having a small plastic gunsmith mallet to hit the front of the barrel on some of the guns as some are so tightly slid on the frame, they stick and need a little persuasion. All in all it is easy, about the same as a 1911 full strip of the lower in complexity.

My Mark II is pretty easy to strip and clean. Granted, you do have to read the owners manual to do it.

Hi,

Look at the ruger 22/45 MK3 with the factory threaded barrel and picatinny rail, lighter weight, shorter length and it works very, very well with a Yankee Hill supressor too...

What sort of grip leaves your thumb behind the bolt????:confused2:

Some folks grip high. Won't necessarily be the pad of the thumb that gets bit...probably the first joint.
Those Beretta Tomcats were good for slide bite..most due to the short handgrips. Took a chunk or two out of my thumb.

Good luck sorting out how to do it from my owners manual, all I can say is thank god for you tube and that people are out there willing to share, much like we do here.

My best wisdom to share for those who do a Ruger teardown is find the video where the guy shows the position / orientation of the gun and then EXPLAINS why it needs to sit that way.

Many of the video's show them manipulating the gun, barrel up, barrel down etc, but they are doing it so smoothly while talking and assembling the gun that I missed the significance. Ruger's video was this way for me.

Oh, and my favorite line in my book was "lightly Tap" (with a plastic hammer) " to get the barrel off.
