2165 value?

A co-worker of mine has a 2165 hydro w/ a 54" mowing deck. It has a bad starter. He says the motor needs to be pulled to replace. Not a big deal for me, but scares him. He says it is about 12 years old, with approx 500 hours. Wants $500. Is this a good price for an otherwise good condition cub? I am thinking it is to much.

I would think it's worth $500.00 all day long even with a bad starter. I had a 2160 AGS (autogear) not a true hydro like the 2165, same frame,engine etc.
I sold it last year for $1200.00, clean 400+ hours.

I think the deck is a 48" not a 54". I believe the 48" was the largest deck available on that unit. The 2165 as well as the 2160 were built around 94-96 time frame.

If it is a 54", keep in mind a new comparable unit of today (2554) would cost you in excess of $4K. If the hydro is good, deck is good, yes. It's easily worth $500.

Curious as to what the fault with this model is that would not make it a good buy for $500.00? It uses a 16 HP Vanguard, I'll bet the starter can be replaced just by removing the engine mounting bolts and lifting the engine a little. As long as its the hydro and not the autogear, the transaxle should be a lock-stock-and barrel Cub unit.
