After finishing mowing yesterday and putting it away, I noticed a huge oil slick underneath. I eventually traced it to an apparent gasket failure between the block and the housing that covers the PTO end of the crankshaft.

Does anyone know of a source for parts for these engines? I am not turning up much in my searches.

If worse comes to worse, what other engines will fit in its place?

Thanks.

In 1776, the colonies started a war with England to win their ________? Anyone? Anyone?

OK, I'll answer my own question: It turns out that the good folks at Cummins Mid America stock Onan parts and had the gasket I needed in stock. I had to buy a whole gasket 'set' however, at the whopping price of.....$4.51.

For those of you who have the Cummins/Onan engines, try your nearest Cummins shop if you need parts.

I got a 2146 with a 14 hp Linamar engine which is made by Onan had it about 2-3yrs.Well I gave it to my son when I bought a Kubota BX1800 with a MMM.Had a rear axle seal start leaking on the cub it had about 1 month left on the warranty.Other than putting a new valve cover gasket on it when I adjusted the valves no problems.Once you cut with the Kubota you want want to go back to the Cub. But the Cub is the best riding mower I had ever had.

Hey "cp1969", I like your "Ferris Bueller" humor and the fact that you list your flying time in your profile is a hoot ! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Unfortunately for me, I don't have as many flying hours as you /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I'm glad someone got the Ferris Bueller question.

This engine repair, as is typical with most of my undertakings, has turned into an adventure.

Replacing the blown gasket was easy enough, but in removing the engine I broke off one of the bolts holding the shaft drive adapter on the flywheel. I'm not sure this piece even needed to come off, but I thought it did and managed to break one of the four bolts. Drilling it out wasn't hard, either, and retapping seemed to be successful, but when I tightened up the new bolt, it stripped. So now I need to put a heli-coil in that stripped out hole.

Also, Cub uses a strange cushion drive between the engine and the shaft. There are eight individual rubber-like drive cushions which fit between the shaft and the adapter plate on the flywheel. How I'm going to get all eight of those to stay in place when I reconnect the shaft to the flywheel, I have no idea.

FWIW, the engine has 276 hours on it, and inside is as clean as a brand new one. I've been using Cub's 'low ash' 30w oil (one change per year, roughly) but Cummins told me that is NOT the oil they'd recommend...they said to use 15w-40. That would be great because I've got gobs of it lying around.

Use some grease to stick/hold all the parts together

It was actually no big deal.

I just slid the engine back far enough that the shaft was partly in the coupler, then put each one of the eight rubber cylinders in place. Then, jiggle and slide the engine back the rest of the way until the shaft/cylinders were completely engaged. Piece of cake. I had a harder time getting the throttle cable set properly.
