I need a block heater for the 2120. I suspect the glow plugs are either weak or non functioning.
It starts pretty hard once the mercury drops much below 30. Once I get into spring/ summer I will look further into the issue.
In the meantime since the tractor lives outside, and the machine will benefit from the heater regardless, I suspect this should solve the problem in the short term. I was going to go with a freeze plug installation, but it looks like a bit of a pain on this tractor. I also have a scut which I was going to install a block heater as well, so now I'm thinking maybe a magnetic heater so I can use it where I need it.

Any suggestions?

Magnetic heaters are ineffective as compared to a frostplug style block heater. New Holland sells the correct kit for your tractor complete with instructions very reasonably. 86590117 is the part number and it shouldn't cost you over $30. It isn't any more complex to install than any other frostplug heater.

Fast, Cheap, Good ; pick any two.

When you plug it in, run the extension cord through the steering wheel, then you won't drive off and break the connector.

Lol good tip. I would be the one to do that too:eek:

I installed the factory block heater on my 1920 about 10 years ago. The hardest part was getting the freeze plug out. Follow the directions as to the orientation of the heating element and you should be good to go. Bill C

That's my concern with the ford. It's fairly old, looks like I will at least need to remove the fuel filter, and if the plug is difficult to remove it could really turn into a project.

Any tips for removing the plug?

Drill a hole into the freeze plug slightly smaller than the sheet metal screw on the end of a slide hammer. Screw the sheet metal screw in, then operate the slide hammer, pulling the freeze plug out. You may want to spray PB blaster, or WD40 for several days before plug removal. You can also usually by tapping the plug on one side with a blunt punch rotate the plug, and then pry out. Take your time, and be careful.

Not really so.
Simply pound a screwdriver and pierce the frost plug and pry it out.

Just remember to drain coolant to a level below the plug. Most tractors will have a drain valve at the lowest point, catch, drain filter and re use the coolant.

The whole exercise should take about 1/2 hour.

OR you could get a lower rad hose circulating heater, which would be easier to install.

Nah, the block heater works better. Don't need to remove fuel filter IIRC. I did have some trouble with the ears on the new unit that catch the block, so maybe more like an hour.
