Welcome!

Well, I asked and didn't get an answer.

I don't know when this problem occurred. Summer/winter? I also don't know for sure where "ambient temperature" refers to. The outside air temperature, the air near the final drive gear box? 104F is certainly possible there. I went with Centigrade thinking the OP sounds very technically oriented. So sue me.[/QUOTE]

I really didn't think it necessary to respond to a question where the answer is quite obvious. When a weather person here in the USA says it 40 deg. do you really think they are expressing it as Celsius? FYI, ambient temp. is the temp of the surrounding environment.

The front axle case of a 2120 s not vented. They will build some pressure under normal circumstances, but do not leak unless there is a problem. As suggested, overfilling reduces the air volume and increases pressure buildup. Other causes of leakage include oil contaminated by water which expands more than oil when heated, and even more when it evaporates within the housing. Worn seals; seals are a wear item, and if original, are nearing 15 years old at a minimum. Bearing wear will cause part misalignment and seal leakage. Many of these non-vented axles will push a small amount of oil after wide ambient temperature swings and than be fine for months after.

Goodbye and good luck.

RickB, your analysis is spot on. I figured it out just after I did the post. Once I determined there was no vent and thought about it I concluded that it was not vented by design. Venting could allow dirt, water, etc. to enter the gear housings given the conditions a tractor is exposed to. A couple of advantages of having positive pressure inside the gear housings are; 1, making it more difficult for foreign matter to enter, 2, when the seals start to fail it will push oil out. So it will be noticed and can be corrected. The seals were original and 25 yrs. old, the looked fairly simple like packing. Whereas the new ones have a dust lip and a primary lip, they should be more effective. Before I opened the gear cases up I drained and looked at the oil, no metal, no burnt smell, no water, and the level was correct. I also jacked up the front end and checked the axle for vertical and axial movement, ok, turned it over by hand and no noise or clunking. So it was quite clear it was just the seals that were the problem. Had it back together last week and ran it quite a bit over the weekend, everything is fine now. Thanks for your input.

Almost 20 years of experience at a New Holland dealership, I should have absorbed something. Glad you are back up & running.

What did the seals end up costing you? Looks like there is two on the final drive?...I'm in the same boat
