2110 trans lock up

Bought this 2110 in 1998. From day one the range gear will lock up if you drive in 4 th. Not all the time, but 1/2 the time. If I loan it to some one, I always tell them, "Don't put it in range 4". Dumb thing to do because they ALWAYS will just to see if I was lying. Then I have to go there. Take out the dent springs and balls. Remove the top cover. Pry gears apart and replace everything. I never drive in 4 th since there is seldon need to go that fast. But if some one knows a simple fix, it sure would be nice to have it work right. This is a 2110 compact.

There several springs and detent balls. On mine there two for the gear shifter and two for range shifter. Have you compared them all together? is there any chance that the range 4 has a different dia ball or spring? are the spring the same size? any possibility that one of the spring is broken off some? I'd take the cover off and move shift boss on range 4 back and forth to see if anything is binding.

I would also look at the shifter rod end to make sure it is round and smooth.

Haven't had cover off in last 4 years. Haven't loaned out tractor. When I had it apart, all springs and balls look fine and are same size. When I got it unloocked, gears shifted fine. With engine off, all gears shift ok. Only locks up while in motion and not all the time. I won't go into 4th to drive a quarter mile.
