My question is that my original 17hp engine threw a connection rod through the block. I found a scrap Huskee mower with a great 20 hp kohler opposed twin engine. I removed the 20hp in hopes of bolting it directly into my 317 but ran in to a problem. The original engine didn't have an oil filter and the new engine does. The right side engine mounting bracket will not clear the filter. Can I remove the filter mounting and block it off with the bolt on plate from the 17hp engine? Other than the oil filter hitting my engine mount the engine looks like it will bolt right in perfectly. I guess I could cut and modify the engine mount and make it fit but I'd rather not. My question is will the engine still have adequate lubrication without the filter operating? I know I'd have to change the oil more regularly.

If the cover bolts up and ALLOWS oil flow then it will work. If it is not a bypass plate then NO you can not use it.
