Ok guys, gonna try to keep brand bashing out of this..... Wife says my '99 Chevy 1500 with 240k miles has got to go...

I'm looking for a gasser only, can't justify the diesel. I haul lots of feed/junk/utv/tractor to my land 120 miles away several times a year but drive 62 miles round trip to work daily so want something that safely handle 10k+ #s.

I can get a 6.0L Chevy 2500 for $1k less than a comparable equipped f150 ecoboost and it's a tried and true engine with none of the stuff (turbos, shifting from 8 to 4cyl, etc) but should I consider the new fangled twin turbo technology for the MPG when empty?

Gonna probably buy a GN 24' trailer next to haul the tractor and implements when needed.

Honestly both will do.

The cost after 10 yrs is what i would consider. My guess is that will be about a wash also. Yes, ecoboost gets better millage but 2500 series trucks have good resale. This is a tough one.

EcoBoost 5 mpg better than the 2500 6.0. Favor Ecoboost.

Towing capacity favors the 2500.

Resale will favor the 2500.

To me it's a wash. If you weren't driving 60 miles a day I would say the GM hands down but with all that driving the Ecoboost wins.

Might want to consider an F-250 Super Duty with the 6.2 V8 gas engine. If you're going to buy a GN trailer in the future I'd stay with a 250/2500 series truck.

I have a 2012 Ford Superduty 6.2L single cab with 8' box & 6 spd auto that I used for work.

I drive 150-400 kms daily with mostly light loads in the box. Drive 40% paved highway the rest on good gravel forest roads.

Currently have 70000 miles & avg 19L/100 km (12.4 us mpg). Get about 400 miles out of a tank.

My wife drives a 13 f150 EB. Buying the eb was a waste of money but that's all that was offered with the FX4. We love the truck but the mileage was way off. She gets about 18 mpg. When we take it on a road trip with cruise set at 65-70 it might creep up to 18.5. I put some 295/70/18s and now she gets about 15.5. I think we woukdve been better off with the 5.0. The new trucks might be different, just don't trust their numbers.

My vote would be for the 2500 chevy. It will handle a GN better and is more setup for pulling.

Stopping power and safer towing more weight goes to the 2500. A half ton is not in the same league as a 2500/250.

I have a 2011 EB. I think you'll be better served by the 3/4 ton gasser.

I don't know how the modern 1/2 ton trucks do towing 10k, but my old '06 2500 gasser always feels secure with a big tow on even with more tongue weight than is recommended without an equalizer hitch. I'd vote for the Chevy.

I'd go 2500 too and I'd even give a serious look to the F250. I am hearing there are some good deals on the F250's right now and with the new super duty coming out in 2017 it seems like everyone wants the current super duty.

I'm kinda with Chris on this one. I would guess it depends on the definition of "several times a year" and how much emphasis you want to place on the daily mileage. Were it me, and several truly meant 3 times a year I would be hard pressed not to go with the Eco-boost due to the improved mileage. Check out gm-trucks.com, its a decent forum for GM truck owners and you can get an idea of the mpg's for new 2500's.

I've thought about trading my '14 1500 for a 2500 a couple of times, but the number of reports of 11 mpg for city driving reminded me that it wouldn't be worth it. Well, that and I personally don't have a need for a 2500 although I would darn sure enjoy it if I did. :D
