My neighbor gave me this mower yesterday along with a piece of a part that I have identified as part of the variable speed pulley.

Check photo. What could cause this to happen? I have the part ordered but don't want to end up with another broken part.

Also any tips on how to change out the part would be appreciated.

Thanks

That's strange. If the belts had a flat spot maybe? You will want to use only OEM belts BTW. I guess just be sure it is mounted securely and the bearings new (941-0600).

I replaced the pulley and the mower does forward and reverse just fine now even with the old belt.

Could have been a defective part or the nut came loose maybe. 2014 unit is really not that old unless some one beat the daylights out of it.

I have a Troy Built Pony since around 1996 overall its been flawless and I worked I hard for many tears. Broke a few tines and the welds on the handle bare brace even wore the valves down in the little briggs motor that I eventually relapped and set clearance over (it was having a loss of power al good now tho)

Never had belt an or pully problems that I can ever remember.. I'm thinking I did replace the belt though once

I should clarify. This unit is a Pony riding lawn mower.
