2014 Mahindra 3616 Shuttle Intermittent Starting Problems

Unfortunately I just checked and the tractor only has a 12 month bumper to bumper warranty and a 5 year powertrain. The dealer said that any external engine components (starter, alternator, etc) are part of the 12 month warranty. He did tell me that there are a couple other safety switches on the seat/pto so I am going to look into those today. If anyone has a wiring diagram for this tractor or something similar and would be willing to send me a picture it would be more than appreciated.

Ask your dealer for that in writing, because it is not correct. You should have a warranty agreement, all dealers are to hand these out upon initial sale.

As for the problem, it is almost always a dirty connection or a safety switch when this happens. There are several. I've never seen a starter fail, and key switches rarely fail.

Hello all,
I am new to the forum and also new to Mahindra tractors but I am a mechanic by trade and have worked on several Kubota, J/D, Massey tractors over time. My problem is with the 2014 Mahindra 3616 Shuttle that I have. When I go to start it, it seems like there might be a dead spot in the starter motor but the local dealership said a new starter is up near $1000.00 and they've never seen one go bad. What happens is that it will intermittently click sometimes and I need to keep bumping the key to get it to finally start. At first I took the neutral safety switch (mounted on forward/reverse handle) completely out of the system and it seemed to work fine with the wires directly connected bypassing the switch. I bought a switch and replaced it... same problem. I have cleaned/checked the battery and terminals, checked/cleaned all my connections at the ignition switch, neutral safety switch, starter, etc. I have removed the starter and bench tested it and it tests perfect on the bench. Also if I disconnect the signal wire from the starter mounted solenoid and hook in a remote starter switch to the battery it works fine every time. I have checked voltage at the signal wire when the no crank/clicking occurs and I'm getting slightly below battery voltage and I am also getting voltage through the solenoid to the starter motor itself....

What has me stumped is that it works fine with a jumper wire or a remote starter button in place of the factory starter signal wire but when the signal is coming from the key through the neutral safety switch sometimes it wont turn over it just clicks (and its definitely the starter solenoid clicking throwing the bendix, I can feel it). Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this particular tractor or something close? If the thing didn't work with the jumper or remote button I would say it has a dead spot in the windings and replace the starter but seeing how the starter is $700 or whatever they said and the starter works fine with the remote button/jumper I'm thinking there's some kind of gremlin in the wiring or there's a relay/switch or something else that I don't know about. The only thing I can think of at this point is rewiring the whole starter signal circuit myself with a new ignition switch but I don't know what else is in that circuit. Any help or diagrams would be greatly appreciated..
Thanks guys

You may want to check that the bracket that the switch is mounted on, that it is not bent. I had one that if i was to guess that someone maybe pulled hard on the shifter lever and bent the bracket not allowing switch to close completely.

I did some more testing/checking things out today and found that the problem goes away if I take the PTO safety switches out of the system and leave the neutral start switch in. One of the PTO switches has quite a bit more resistance when its open so I am going to try replacing that switch and if that doesn't work then it looks like I will be doing the auxiliary relay mod that you guys mentioned. I would like to thank everyone that replied for the input, I really appreciate it. Its nice to be able to talk to people with experience besides a dealer who is trying everything to get me to bring the machine to them. Also I will look into the warranty, the guy at the local dealer sounded pretty sure of himself that it was a 12mo bumper to bumper instead of a 3yr. Thanks again everyone!

Well Dirtrider, our discussion yesterday inspired me to stop at the auto parts store. Last night I installed an accessory relay and the problem is indeed solved. It only took about a half an hour and two beers to complete.

Good work! Ask your selling dealer to fax, mail or email you a copy of the warranty agreement. It's just a few pages.

If your starter ever does need replacing, I would recommend looking for a starter/alternator shop to rebuild it. I had a Ford 3000 that had a bad starter after 25 years. Dealer wanted $600 for a new one. Took it to a rebuild shop. They said it was completely shot. The only salvageable part was the case. It needed a new armature, brushes, etc. Now I'm thinking big money. They had it back to me that afternoon for a total bill of $75. I have since directed several friends to this option, always with happy results.

My Max 28xl does this and it's the safety switch on the PTO. I pull back on the lever and it works fine.

Great advice. We have a really good starter/alternator shop just 4 miles from us and they can often work wonders for less than half the price of new. A starter failure on a Mitsu/Mahindra is really rare. Almost always when a person calls for a starter the real problem is corroded battery cables or a safety switch that failed or got damaged. We have retailed a couple thousand of these and I'm not sure if we ever had a bad starter. What kills a starter is bad glow plugs. Then a guy will crank and crank and over heat the starter.

COULD BE YOUR GOV., SEEN THOSE GO BAD ON THAT MODEL BEFORE. I HAVE ALSO SEEN WIRING HARNESS GET PINCHED DURING ASSEMBLY BETWEEN MAIN FRAME COMPONENTS

The problem is in your starter solenoid. The contact plate in the solenoid that makes contact with the lugs that energize the starter motor have probably got some bad contact points where they have been arcing. If you can take the solenoid apart and clean the contact points it will fix your problem.
