2009 Mule 3000 won't lock into forward gear

I'm having an odd problem with our VFD's mule. It won't lock into forward. It locks into reverse just fine. I removed the shifter cable and tried shifting it by hand and sometimes I can get it into gear. Once it's in it's fine. Anybody ever encounter this before? is there a ball detent on the shifter that can be replaced? If so is it a cast iron b**ch to get to? Our VFD really needs this vehicle to be up so any help would be greatly appreciated.

What happens when it won't go in, does it pop out, or not go in at all?
How tight was the shift linkage?

Pops out and grinds. The lever moves easily enough and snaps into reverse just fine. the detent seems to click in both directions. If I snap it into drive it works sometimes and you hear the same internal click you do in reverse.

Found it. Babbit's calls it "Lever-Comp FR/RR" and it is the little bugger that the shift lever attaches to. The little pawl on the inside had broken and was wallering out the hole. That gear box is a sod to remove.
