Allis Chalmers D17, John Deere A
Hello, I work in Milwaukee, but live life in Northern Wisconsin. My family has been blessed with a piece of land for about 80 years. Its about 250 acres that is surrounded by public forest, with very little access from the other side. My Dad is 71 and still hops off of his John Deere A with a jammer on the back for logging. but it is getting hard for him. We have a 50's Allis Chalmers D17 Gas that has managed to pull my disk and brush hog and 3 bottom plow for food plots. I have a 20 acre field that my grandfather cleared in the 30's to land airplanes on. We call it the airport. (friends look at me funny when i bring them there because this field is literaly in the middle of thousands of acres of State Forest) Anyway my goal is to plant enough food to pull every deer off of the corn piles that the public land hunters dump in the woods in Nov. And have a tool to move snow and dirt around, and drag a tree out of the woods now and then. No heavy farming being done.
I've got "newer" tractor fever. The D17 broke and the implement dealer near me (30 miles) is backed up for weeks. I was pulling the disk with the " A" and it was really working, and i got bit by a hornet and sun burnt something fierce. SOOO time for an upgrade.
My question for you all. Based on the internet info on tractor house. I can get a 2009 5 series M model with about 1500 hours for about the same price as a 2013 5 series E model with very few hours. With a loader and cab about 45-50k depending on 85 horse or 95 horse. Which one would you folks choose? I'm inclined to go with the newer E series. I don't "think" I need the "beefier" frame and it seems like the creature comforts of the newer E models have caught up to the M's of a few years ago.
Any advice is appreciated. I will also be buying this from a dealer sight unseen other than pictures and having it shipped. The supply of such machines in Wi seems to be much smaller than a little further South.
Thanks!!!

Low hour 2013 E is pre tier 4 engine and has the nice cab, that would be my choice.

Welcome to TractorByNet!

We moved your thread to the John Deere Ag Tractors forum. :)

Write down 2 colums, like and dislike then fill out for both tractors. Then go back and see what you thought. You will find things much clearer. Likely one tractor will have a slightly feel/fit .

See this post: (comparing open station to open station, but much applies to the cab tractors too)
Ok Let's be real the 5085 M is so vastly different from a 5085 E that I don't know where to start. But I will try.
The 5085 M is 2013 Technology the 5085E is a 5420 or 1998 Technology( I am not saying which is better Just they are different, I prefer to move forward)
The 5085 M is a mid frame tractor, the 5085 E uses the engine and tranny as a frame. So the M has much higher torsional strength in loader and twisting applications on uneven ground. The mid frame is also helpful when splitting the tractor and other maintenance.
The 5085 M has Larger Rear axle housing and larger components made to handle heavier duty applications. Both are made in China but the 5M has a USA made Transmission
The 5M has synchronized ranges the 508E does not. That is a huge help in transport and it shows how much better the new Transmission is over the old. Syncro ranges is huge.
The 5085 M has EH 3 point hitch controls which is a huge benefit for precise and comfortable work. It also allows a very quick raise and lower for working with tillers and mowers. I find I cannot live without EH 3PTH, I did for many years with my Kubotas. Frack that
The 5M series has Radial tires as a choice, so much better for wear and field apps and ride if you transport your tractor much.
The 5M series has 20% higher implement flow which will help that loader cycle much faster.
The 5M Deluxe platform is truly flat and suspended so it is much more comfortable than the 5085E.
The 5085M has the PVX engine 4 valve per cylinder and the same as used in the 6M while the 5085E has the Powertech E engine. 2 valve fixed turbo, you get the idea. 2005 vs 2013 again.
The 5M has 25mph transports speeds available the 5085E goes 17mph, huge for transport from job to job or field to field.
The 5085 M has remote 3pt hitch controls for easier implement hookups, and a better sway control system than the 5085E
These are real substantial differences and well worth the extra cost if, speed and comfort are important. Oh the 5085E is a great tractor and it is very good looking. It can do everything a 5M can do and alot cheaper, but never kid yourself the 5085 M has the strength features and ability of a much better tractor at a good price.
As for the guy who was talking 5065E You are looking at a 5003 tractor in essence and it is a great tractor but it is Old Tech, no comparison whatsoever to a 5065M or the 5085E

And this is an answer I gave to your question in another thread:
A couple thousand dollars. :D

Same engine.
E has a 12 speed transmission, M has a 16 speed.
The M is a little heavier tractor. From what I understand, it's the frame.
The M has a bit more lift capacity and increased hydraulic flow.

Here's a link to the TractorData pages for each:
5M
5E

I'm assuming that you've been to the Deere website already?

Here's the link to an older discussion that was a pretty lengthy of the 65HP E vs. M, but much of the information applies to the higher HP models: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/john-deere-buying-pricing/181242-jd-5065e-vs-jd-5065m.html?highlight=5085m

Good reading in all of those threads. You can also use the search function to find more.
