Welcome to TBN!

You may get more responses in the "Ag tractors and machinery" heading, I would give that a try.

The 6403 has been a very reliable model. It is a no frills, "price fighter" model. It does not have all the fancy creature comforts of the more expensive 6405, 6410,and 6420, but the machine is very strong and reliable. It has a 9 speed forward three reverse speed transmission. It is synchronized on the top shaft which means gears one through 3 are synchronized as well as reverse. A,B and C ranges are not synchronized. Tractor should be stopped before Ranges are shifted. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd can be shifted on the go using the clutch.

You spent a fairly substantial amount of money for a tractor but it doesn't sound like you did much research before the purchase. The 64xx series machines are pretty big and powerful (60 plus HP).What, if I may ask, are you planning on doing with it?

Its through a family member that cant keep it and i'm helping out either way. Ill mostly be maintaining about 600 acres with it and 1996 jd 2wd 6200. Appreciate the replys, to clarify,i need to stop when i change a, b, or c with that transmission but that i dont have to stop when changing 1,2,3. Correct? Would that be the same with the older jd 6200?

The 6403 while higher hp is has a basic transmission as jd110 mentioned, the 6200 has two transmission choices either a 12 sp or 16 sp both of which are more deluxe models. The 6200 has a lot less power but may work out best where you need more manueverability, the 6403 will work out fine for heavy tillage work. Both would be good to have on 600 acres.

The 6200 has 16 spds. I always stop between the A,B,C,& D gears but don't when i'm switching between 1,2,3,&4 gears. Is that okay?

As long as there is no gear grinding I think it is ok to shift without stopping.

You got it. The ABCD gears are the range gears.
