2006 Deere 3320 loud knock at startup

Maybe 3 times over the last 6 years that I have owned this tractor, when I started it up the motor has been excessively loud. Dieseling like it was going to explode, then smoothing out maybe 30 to 40 seconds later. Seems to only do it when it is below 45 in my heated shop, and only once in a great while.

I have been using the grey powerservice with every tank to keep everything clean in the fuel system.

It doesn't have any lasting affect, doesn't blow anymore smoke than a normal cold start, just loud enough to make you crap your drawers.

Anyone else have this happen? Should I be concerned?

I have 1050 hours on the tractor.

Maybe has something to do with the way you sometimes shut the engine off when done using the tractor ?? Just a thought...

There is a cold start feature on the engine that advances the timing on the fuel injection pump during cold temps. When this occurs on my 3320 the engine starts and runs at a higher than normal RPM and is considerably louder for a short period of time (less than a minute? I have never timed it). Mine has never been so loud as to make me mess my pants though, but I wear ear plugs to save what little hearing I have left, and I have come to expect the event during the early morning starts during the winter months . . . even here in South Carolina.

Sounds like you have an injector that sticks periodically. Unless you have other worrisome symptoms I wouldn't worry. Use a good diesel conditioner with a lubricant.
