2005 John Deere 990
Hello all. I am new to this forum. I grew up with tractors and am now 51 and am looking at purchasing one. I own over 2 acres and it is wooded and has a lot of rocks etc. I want to build a barn. I burn about 6 cord of wood a winter. I have found a 2005 JD 990 MFWD with 300CX FEL, JD 8B BH, JD pallet forks, JD Ballast Box, and a speeco log splitter which you can find here SpeeCo Inc. - Log Splitter, Tractor Parts, OEM and Farm Accessory Contact information.

The owner told me that it was purchased when he bought a piece of land so that he could use it on the new property but then he had to sell the property and the 990 was hardly used. It has 171 hours on it. The BH has been used once for pulling a stump and all the rest of the hours have been used running the wood splitter. It has been garage kept except when splitting wood. I don't know about the maintenance yet. The price the owner is asking is $25k firm unless I pay cash. Then he is willing to negotiate some.

I have attached 4 pictures of the unit. I have looked at all the forum posts on the 990 that I can find on TractorByNet as well as some others. Most of them are several years old because this model is no longer made and has been replaced by the 4005.

The negatives have been more about the standard transmission than anything else. standard trans are the tractors I drove while growing up. They were a MF 35 and then an IH 330 utility. I drove a friends Kubota about 10 years ago (I don't remember the model #) but it had a syncro Trans and I liked it. It had a FEL and I moved a lot of dirt with it filling in a driveway etc.

The other negative I have read is that it can become fuel starved if you are going down hill and the tank is below half empty.

One other item is that some have found the battery getting corroded easily.

finally I have heard some complain about the 300CX FEL noting it was made in china and the cast was not as good as the old 440 FEL.

I priced out a new 4005 with all the same attachments on JD痴 web site and it came out to be $35k and some change. That did not include the Wood Splitter. Buying new I can get 0% financing for 60 months on a new one with good credit which I have. I will have to use my home equity to buy this one if I were to buy it.

The good things that I have heard about the unit is the 40.4 HP Yanmar engine 4TNV84-EJKM is superb for fuel efficiency, power etc. I talked with a Kubota dealer several months ago and he noted that the Yanmar engine is excellent and he wished that Kubota could use it and hinted that it might happen at some point.

Also the tractor is simple and not so complicated and that it would work for many many years like the tractors of yesteryear. In addition all the parts are metal (e.g. fenders etc) where newer tractors are being built with plastics etc.

I won稚 be driving it every day but there are some days when I would work it hard at least in my view point. My questions are as follows:

1. Is this a good buy or is it overpriced?
2. Is this JD 990 a good machine to buy as opposed to the other guys comparable models, Kubota, Kioti, Mahendra, BobCat, New Holland, Massey Ferguson, Cub etc?
3. I like some of the newer capabilities that you can get like a skid steer capability to change out the FEL with something else easily and also having a thumb on the BH so you can pick things up with it etc. Can some of these things be added after the fact like the thumb on the BH?

I know that this is a long post but I thought that it would be good to give you all my thoughts and hear what you who are much more experienced have to say regarding this possible deal that is before me. I was thinking about buying something new but when I saw this, this past Saturday I thought that this could be a real good deal but again I don't know.

Thank you for your help.

You forgot to post the pics, BTW...

I think the 990 is a great tractor and they seem to hold their value quite well...but $25K is a LOT of money.

IIRC, home equity interest is tax deductable, so that's something to consider. It's also a long term "loan" so payments should be fairly low.

If you're ready to keep the tractor for the long term, I think it would be OK but not a really good buy ($18K to $20K would be a good buy). I do suggest you look at other tractors too, though, before you make your final decision. Also, check out the online websites www.tractorhouse.com and www.machinefinder.com for comparison purposes.

The Yanmar engines are outstanding...no doubt about that. BTW, the entire 990 (and 4005) is built by Yanmar.

Roy,
thanks for your reply. Sorry about the pictures i thought that I had already attached them with my initial post. Hopefully this will get them posted.

So would $19k to $20k be the right amount with all the attachments as well that this guy is offering?

Thanks.

Rob

Roy,

I did a quick search on machinefinder.com and found this 2007 990 with FEL & BH and the price is $23,500. I am guessing they would work on the price. It doesn't say how many hours and from the picture the bucket on the FEL is pretty bent up suggesting some harsh use in my mind. they also swapped the front tires/rims around as well.

2007 John Deere 990 Tractors - Compact (1-40hp.) - John Deere MachineFinder

I also looked at tractorhouse.com yesterday and they had 2 units from a rental agency with the FEL with 500+ hours and they want $16.5K for them. You can find them here 2008 JOHN DEERE 990 40 HP to 99 HP For Sale At TractorHouse.com

These are all a long way from where I live in NJ. This one for the $25K is 30 miles from me. Again I like your price and that is what I would like to get it for if I could. Maybe I could get him down to $23K with cash. If so that would match this unit in GA which seems to be a little beat to me just by the picture.

I was also noticing that Yanmar as of Sept 1, 2011 has now stopped selling their utility tractors under the Cub name and have gone strictly to the Yanmar name. They have the same incentives as all the others right now with their 0% financing for 60 months. The EX450 is a 45 HP unit with a Synchro Trans or the LX series with the Hydro trans.

I have a friend in Sweden who purchased a used Yanmar that came from Japan. I think that it was around a 30 HP unit with MFWD. It was used in the rice patties and had around 800 hours on it and probably around 10 years old. I got to drive it and it was a nice little machine.

would I find other brands that would have a lower resale value than the JD Yanmar models?

This 990 unit with 300CX FEL is similar in the amount of hours used at 174 and it is a year older being a 2004 and they want $20k+. Now I understand that this place is in Canada and I know they charge more. You can find it here: 2004 John Deere 990 Tractors - Compact (1-40hp.) - John Deere MachineFinder

One thing to consider when using www.tractorhouse.com or www.machinefinder.com is these list dealer prices.
Private party prices should be lower (no "overhead" to pay for).

Yanmar built a lot of the Deere CUTs over the years. Both of my previous tractors, Deere 670 and Deere 790 were manufactured by Yanmar. My current machine, a Deere 4400, is Deere built with a Yanmar engine.
No complaints, so far.

One thing I've noticed (did a non-scientific study several years ago, in fact) is tractor resale prices drop fast the first 5 years, then plateau.
Keep the in mind...

So, now that you've seen comparison prices, what do YOU think?

I think you should talk him down (have cash in hand) a few thousand and go for it...if you're OK with going $25K in debt with your home equity. There are good things about using home equity, but there are pitfalls too.

Good luck!!

I think I would do alot more looking before I spent that much on a 990 tlb setup. I recommend you consider a 110tlb used for close to the same money and is much easier to use as a backhoe loader machine. My next door neighbor has a 990 with hoe and really wishes he had bought a 110 instead.

Since the tractor sounds to be in good condition and not abused, and has so few hours, I didn't think the price sounded too bad. That darn backhoe attachment is worth several thousand on its own, $5000-6000 used maybe? My new 4005 and 300cx loader with taxes was around 20k. But you've got several attachments along with your used one that I did not get including the backhoe.

I think the 990/300cx combination is attractive, I'm happy with mine. The transmission is definitely the sticking point. I'd prefer power reverser, but I am dealing with it because it's the only 4000 series I could afford

hello i have a 2000. 990 loader and bh 269hrs really good machine no complaints. i think that is way over priced thou, one thing you mite want to consider is the bh i bought mine 4 yrs ago and dont use it much at all and its hard to get on and off, the subfram pins under the tractor are hard to line up, it also takes up a lot of room.

Steve took the words out of my mouth, I'd say to look at a JD 110. They have hydrostatic, more comfort and a lot more options, as well as more HP, stronger loader and hoe. They can be found for relatively the same price. I have one that I've been watching on eBay, I'm holding off till spring to get a better deal on my tractor, but with you being able to buy now I'd say take a good hard look at this one:
JOHN DEERE 110 TLB SPLIT LOADER BUCKET BACKHOE with only 312.6 hours | eBay

It's newer, only slightly more hours, 4in1, hydrostatic, backhoe w/ hydraulics ready for a thumb, has the 3 pt, I also contacted him about the 3 rear remote package, he wasn't sure since he was selling it for his parents, said he'd get back to me but hasn't. They have it listed at $25k as well and this is a much more capable tractor. Depending on your parts of the country I'd see this machine as your best option.
