BX23
Hi TractorByNet.

I have a good running BX23 with 450 hours.
Was thinking of trading in for a L3301.

The dealer who services the tractor threw out they go between $9500 and $11,500
without seeing the unit. Said he would give at least $9500 and that with only 450 hours
that's nothing.

Go back to iron out numbers and dealer says he needs to send someone to look at the tractor,
opens a book and says Kubota says $5500 is the trade in value since it is a 2004.

I got to thinking and replied a BX23 weither it's a 2008 or a 2004 still has only 450 hours, with a FEL with hooks, Backhoe, Toothbar for FEL newly refilled weighted bar tires with tubes and a new Kubota seat I bought from these guys - not a knock off.

I looked at the faded tractor and it's not perfect, but I see BX23 going in the 11K to 12.5K range.
I was hoping for $10,000 to $9500. The side of the tractor says BX23 and it does not say BX2350 for example.

I thought I haven't been to TractorbyNet in a while and I usually get good advice here.

Thanks

I have a BX23 and there's NO WAY I'd take $5,500 as a trade in allowance. Don't know how they sell in your area, but it would sell quickly here for $10,500 - $11,000, I think.

So I think a $9,000 trade-in allowance would be fair. But you could get more by selling it yourself. Is there some reason you don't want to do that?

Thanks Pappy - What year BX23 do you have?

At the moment my wife and I have been trying to sell our Toyota pickup on Ebay and this is the 5th time re-listing it. What people I found are doing is placing a winning bid in the last few minutes to then say their kid placed the bid on their account, and cancel the bid.

Basically Ebay does nothing and what I found is there are people out there that are doing this to get your phone number to then try to sell you vehicle insurance. I put 2 and 2 together when the guy asked if he could call to discuss pickup and my wife this time gave him my cell number. We were driving today and I got the call and after I hung up, her cell phone rang with the same car insurance call for cars older than 2006 with XYZ miles. She told them no to call and they recalled her 3 more times. Ruthless people.

My reason for telling this story is the frustration of trying to sell something at the moment, but I agree with you it may be worth the effort. I thought the dealer was trying to get cute as I also have seen like you mentioned, 10-12K and some of these don't have a backhoe.

My BX23 has a heavy duty toothbar, new $300 seat and tires are good. Runs well. I had to drive 30 minutes to the dealer and I was ripped on the bait and switch. I am not naming the dealer so I hope I am not breaking any rules - but relaying and questioning my experience as I left disappointed.

Patience is your friend. No way the trade in price is in the ballpark. I wouldn't want to take no more than a 10% 'loss' on trading vs. outright sell.

You are only using the BX23 about 50 engine hours per year.

Why do you need an L3301? To reduce your engine operating hours to 40 hours per year?

How many hours per year is your BX23 Backhoe used? How much do you used your Three Point Hitch, rather than your Backhoe?

What are the main tasks which you use the BX23 to address? Is BX23 satisfactory for these tasks?

Thanks - Good Questions and observations. When I first bought the BX23, I used it to plant trees, move dirt, dig some stumps and rocks, dug out brush with toothbar, snow clearing and keeping long gravel driveway maintained. I recall during stump and rock removal, the BX23 struggled. I bought the BX23 new and it made life easier and the above was during the first 3 years.

I then moved to the shoreline where it has sandy soil, no rocks. Digging is so easy, like butter. Cleared snow, planted trees, dug long trenches to bury water lines, landscaped land and moved a lot of top soil, moved a couple cords a year of fire wood, or any other heavy lifting. It's a back saver and can't imagine being without it.

I am selling the shoreline house and moving to a wooded 3 acre lot that is lightly sloped and has ledge 3 to 4 feet down. There is an old stone wall 280 feet wide by 6 feet I will cut through for a driveway and build an access way requiring moving a lot of rock and soil. I have a lot of trees to cut down, split, and move. Just a lot of digging and would prefer more power and larger BH bucket. Area gets a lot of know and will have a 250 plus foot driveway to maintain. Foundation work, and a lot of material moving. Will have to dig a 300 foot long trench for power, cable so I am sure the excavator will charge a lot to simply do this one of many jobs. I have plenty of time so I don't mind clearing the land over time so I won't mind a bigger machine.
I considered the B26 HST and the L5201 HST, but it seems the power of the L3301 should work fine. Though I only have 450 hours on my BX23, I feel those hours did a lot for me and was a time saver. Some people like to rent, but if I need to move a couple cords of wood 150 feet, it's nice to be outdoors, grab the Kobota
and get it done, rather than going to a rental agency, sign a contract, rush to use the tractor, and worry about returning it in time. Others might respond why not use your mower with a tow behind wagon or something, and my answer is you never know what you are going to be doing and it's nice having the tractor there. I think if one owns a Kubota they know what I am saying, though I understand the practical thinking process of your questions, which is why not keep the Bx23.

I do not use box blade or other PTO attachments. Basically FEL and BH for digging and lifting, but may use if we get around 10 acres in California. If you guys were to sell the BX23 on your own, would you Ebay or use other sources?

$5,500 was an insult! Try Craigslist, for sure. Ebay is getting trashy. Craigslist has it's problems too but at least there are no selling fees and the buyers are more local.

In CT you should easily get $9500-$11,000 private sale. I have a 2013 BX25D and was quoted by 3 reputable dealers between $10,000-$12,500 trade in. Try another dealer.

I don't even know what year model it is. Oh, and I replaced the seat on mine too. Messicks had a few Kubota seats left that were a direct replacement but were MUCH MUCH MUCH better than the stock seat that came on the BX23. (What was Kubota thinking with that seat in the shape of a ski jump??)

I also own a BX 23, mine is an '05 with 477 hours , love the machine, but it has its limitations. Which is why I'm looking to trade it in, a Deere dealer offered me 5000 trade on a new Deere. I dropped by the Massey dealer and he offered me $11000 when I combined with a rarely used wood chipper. So I'd say $9000 is a pretty fair trade. The local Kubota dealer still hasn't gotten back to me , but there's more fish in the sea. Good luck on your search!
