Newbie, starting a new thread.

All roads lead to my new purchase being a Jinma 254. With a Y385 engine. thanks for all the help on that. Don't know if I got took on the deal, but for some reason could not pass it up. Got the tractor along with a brush hog, nearly new post hole digger/auger, scrape blade, drum aerator, disc plow, and a boom pole for $2,200. Tractor runs great, but has lots of little issues to address and some neglected maintenance to be done. The thing is showing 130 hrs. Bought from original owner, that lived in my neighborhood and I know it was used very little. Only catch is the tach is not working and therefore the hour meter is not working. He said it had not worked for "a while" aaarrrggghhhh. Figure I'll just guesstimate it has twice as many hours and hold my breath.

Been going through it over the past week or so. Changed oil and oil filter, air filter, tried to grease all the grease points - wow that was a little chore. some fittings were clogged/rusted. some were broken off! Getting rust off wheels and ready to paint them...etc.etc. typical stuff for a somewhat neglected tractor. Have pulled all the broken rear lights and work light off and have ordered new ones online from "Affordable." Probably gonna order the headlights too. All a little pricey, but darn convenient. Temp gauge does not appear to be working, will trace that down. Might be the sensor, loose wire or both.

Have not found a manual yet and have a lot of really stoooopid basic questions;

  • Used Shell Rotella 10w-40w - that sound acceptable?
  • Is there a cross reference available for the various filters it uses (oil, fuel, air etc.) Would like to move Fram/Wix/Purolator/NAPA if possible.
  • Where is the power steering fluid reservoir? ( got to be less than full, have a small leak and don't know where to check or add fluid !)
  • Is there a dipstick or level checking point for the three point hydraulic fluid/oil level?
  • Where is the filling point for three point hydraulic system oil? (what type should be used? Should it be changed? Is there a filter?)
  • Anyone know where I can find a manual? I think the tractor is a 2003, if that matters.
  • Will need to change one of the front high pressure power steering hoses soon.(seeping slightly) Is there a bleed valve somewhere for that ?
  • Amp Meter is swinging wildly left to right - at low rpms - think that is a voltage regulator issue or gauge issue or something else?

Thanks in advance everyone - Sorry for all the questions, but new to this tractor, new to diesel engines and pretty new to tractors in general. Only other one I have is an "antique" John Deere 2 cylinder. :)

I use rotella T 15W40

There used to be a filter crossref, but I dont know where it is at. I use a Napa gold 1516 oil filter on mine. Depending on the filter boss, you may have to unscrew the threaded nipple a bit and re-adjust the locknut to get enough extension to get full thread engagement on the filter.

This tractor uses main hydraulic system for power steering 3PH FEL ect. The reservoir is under the seat where the 3PH cylinder is located.

3PH fill port should be under your left cheek when seated. Big square headed plug left rear corner of the 3PH housing. It should have a dipstick on it for checking level. If they havnt been painted over it was common practice at the factory to shoot a little red spray paint on all the fill/drain points.

That is also the fill point for the hydraulics. AW 32 hydraulic fluid for normal temps, AW46 for hot climates. No filter, there is a #100 mesh strainer on the suction line in the front left corner of the reservoir.

Manual? Not a clue...

Dont need a bleed when you change the steering line, just start the engine and cycle full left to right and back a few times to purge any air.

Twitching ampmeter speaks to me of loose or dirty connection. The volt reg is plugged into a port on the fuseblock at the rear of the engine. As for your tach, it is probably the flywheel pickup. If you disconnect it and connect a voltmeter it should generate nearly a 5V AC signal when the engine is running. You can check the position(close but not touching the flywheel) but it is probably bad. When mine quit it was only outputting 1/2 a volt instead of the 5v that a new one makes...

Wow! Thanks so much Ron. I truly appreciate you taking the time for such a meaningful and helpful post. Will get right on checking out the fluids and voltages!

Thanks Again, Jim

Making progress. Order a bunch of stuff from Circle G in Tennessee. All were received quickly. Little disappointed in each and every light ordered had a different connector, and different color wires. Little bit of an effort to determine the correct wire and to splice, however, in the end all worked out. Now have new headlights, new taillights and a new work light - all working! Power Steering and 3PH hydraulic fluid topped off. Will drain and refill soon.

Another quick question- I have the dash with the individual round gauges. The only one that illuminates is the Tach. Are the others (oil pressure, amp, fuel) supposed to light up? have not investigated whether there is bulb in them yet, so guess I should have looked before asking....if you happen to know, would be great to hear from you.

Also, do ya'll happen to know if generic or other types of "sending units" can be used - oil pressure, water temp, rpm, etc. etc.

Welcome Jeem. Everything RonMar said is true.

I use Delvac 15W40. I find if I use anything lighter it doesn't maintain oil pressure. Mine takes a Fram PH8A oil filter, although that may vary. I buy oil and filters at Walmart which reminds my Chinese tractor of home. The Fram is around $4 so you're not out much if you buy one and it doesn't fit.

Most likely the reason your tach/hour meter isn't running is that your tach sensor needs to be replaced. It's possible it just needs adjustment. To adjust it, with the engine off, screw it in until it touches the flywheel and then back it out 3/4 turn. If it's backed out any further it won't register. Too close and it will hit the flywheel and be destroyed.

These are hard-working tractors, just a little quirky. Parts availability is good once you figure out where to go.

Thanks, will check out that fram. mine came with a brand new chinese filter, but after filling it full of oil and getting ready to put it on while doing the oil change, the darn thing did not fit. Was not even close. Previous owner bought the wrong one online and never verified it. I'll post the number in a different thread. Hopefully someone can use it. The thing has a round o ring seal, mine is flat washer type and the diameter of the threads are way too small, so it could not be screwed on. Went ahead and washed the old filter out with carb cleaner a few times and put it back on for now.

Anyway, another tach and hour meter question - Have this tach with the hour meter built in. rpm_gauge.jpg 10-4 on the checking of the RPM pick-up sensor. - Thanks! ...... Finally, the question - Do I have a separate hour meter sensor or is that all incorporated in the RPM pick-up sensor? ( ask, because I see a separate hour meter sensor for sale on vendor sites.)

The hour meter uses the same sensor as the tachometer (RPM meter).

Thanks! Determined the RPM sensor is bad- both wires broken off inside the unit - ordering a new one today-
