I am wanting to over seed some pastures that I planted this spring, big mistake. So I want to get rid of the weeds and over seed. Can I just spray with some 2-4D wait for the weeds to die then over seed and run a fence panel over it to shake the seed to the ground?

That stuff works good on broadleaf weeds, you could use a "no-till" grain drill to seed it.

Eric, are there any vineyards in your area? I am not sure exactly where you are located but if you have any vineyards within 2 miles (on a very calm day) of you then don't use 2-4D. 2-4D is very harmful to grape vines and using it near them will make you liable for damages.

The closest vinyard is about a 45min drive. The farmer we bought the land from looks like he has wheat in the field behind us. If I could find where to rent a grain drill of any kind I would try that. Until then I am left with a broadcast spreader.

Are some varieties more prone to damage than others? I have been using 2,4-d for a while - years really. It's the prime ingredient in weed-b-gone and most other lawn sprays. I have sprayed right up to my grapes - concord and niagra - with no damage noted.

I do not know about your situation but 2-4D will damage concords and most grape vines. It is illegal to use it within 2 miles of any vineyard in this county.

Of course they want you to use a hooded boom sprayer and apply only to the weeds after bloom but before the grape shoots reach the ground. The label does say to not apply 2-4d to foliage, shoots or stems. Why they would even start to recommend using it in vineyards is beyond me. One of the plants 2-4D controls is vines.

But never use a 2-4D ester in or near a vineyard. The fumes alone will damage the vineyard.

There is even a website dedicated to just 2-4D www.24d.org

Yes
I think it's 14 or 21 days that you need to wait after spraying 2-4D before planting again. it's in the instructions.

A chain harrow works better (kinda covers it up) but a fence panel will work too.

2-4D will also take out a tree if you get it on the leaves. It doesn't bother the bark, as long as there are no cuts in the bark. I just use it on fence rows.

I know, it isn't good for too many broadleafs which is why it isn't legal to use near vineyards here. It doesn't take much at all to damage the vine.
