1st trouble with my JD 4210

I'm hoping it just the battery---

I tractored this morning for about 30 minutes with no problems. After my son's little league game I went out to start the tractor and it wouldn't start.

On my second attempt the Alternator / Battery Charging Light and the Engine Oil Pressure Light were very slow to light up to full strength. The Hour Meter did not appear until the other two lights were at full strength (about 20 seconds or so). I tried to turn it over after everything looked normal and the lights dimmed and there were some faint clicking noises.

Probably the battery. My nephew was playing on my brother's new 5103 and left the lights on... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

May be your battery. But also just remove and clean the terminals real well too. You may also want to check the main hot and grounds from the battery to the starter and frame and make sure they are not loose or corroded. Also check to make sure the line are not swollen anywhere--indicating corrosion within the plastic sheathing...still causes a problem. Good luck...this happens on all tractor not just the JD...they all tend to use cheaper batteries.

A 4210 would be no more than two years old at most, last fall I replaced the OEM battery on a mechanically challenged friend's Ford 1520...his tractor got almost nine years out of the original battery. And it wasn't cared for very well.

Practically every new car comes with a sealed battery that never needs water added, but most tractor batteries have provisions for removing the cell caps and adding distilled water as needed. Letting the battery run low is an excellent way to ruin them long before they should need replacing.
Letting the battery water run low and then attaching a fast charger hastens the process...

And don't ask how I learned that one!! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
