1999 John Deere 4500 PTO enguagement kills engine

Have a 99 JD 4500. When warmed up intermittently when PTO switch is engaged the engine will die.When PTO panel switch is disessenguaged with key still on the engine will restart. I have replaced the panel switch. guessing there is a safety switch malfunctioning somewhere,can anyone describe this issue and give location of malfunction?
