Snow 1998 jd 5210 temp gauge problem

Does your cluster look like the one in my pictures? If yes put the gasket around the glass then set into the top of the cluster. Try flipping the glass over to left or right. If this does not make sense let me and I will post a picture.

Look at the attached pdf as to order to tighten screws down to avoid breaking the glass.

Again consider picking up some resistors, to check your needle adjustments.

Taking the numbers I posted in thread 12 and my test with resisters 120 degrees should just raise the needle a little bit, but I do NOT if block temp equates to coolant temp.

So is the glass held in place by the small nuts on the back of the cluster or by being sandwiched between the black trim and the front of the cluster with the 8 screws?

It seemed to be held in place until I removed the 5 nuts but it may just have been stuck on there since its been there for so long.

I'm also going to start the tractor and keep a check on the restsnce of the sender. I'm going to try my best to calabrate mine at 100 ohms and 50 ohms biased on your pictures.

Ok...I've got everything back together and I see how the glass is held in place. It's held by the 8 screws into the black trim rather than the 5 nuts on the back of the instrument gauge. I tighten them in the pattern your picture recommended and only "snugged" them so to be very careful with the glass.

I looked at your pics very close for 100 ohms and 50 ohms for the needle position. I started the tractor keep a checking with my meter until it got to around 75 ohms (which was between your two pics)....it was 77 to be exact. Attached is the picture of where I set the needle when the sensor read 77 ohms. Looks close to me compared (what should be the middle) of your two pics. What's your thoughts?

Anything is better than what it was.....it would burry in the red 3-4 mins after starting.

You are correct, the glass is held in place by being sandwiched between the black trim and the front of the cluster with the 8 screws. Since you have it all apart you may want to look at this.

Instrument Panel Fogs Up : Fog forms inside instrument panel on some 5000 series tractors, making it hard to read gauges

Good idea to take the ohm reading off the temp. sender to set the gauge. When you take you ohm reading of the sender have it disconnected from the cluster.

Your picture looks good, I attached a picture for 77 ohms. If you want me to take some straight on shots I can do that. If you PM me with your e-mail address I can send you large ones or I can post them.

Here are some URLs you want to look at if you are not aware them.
Leaking Fuel Cap : Solve a leaky fuel cap on some older 5000 series tractors
Clutch Slip on 5000 Series Tractors : Learn the importance of checking and maintaining proper clutch alignment
Front End Noise : Gear backlash causes noise on 5000 series tractors

Wow. Looking at your pics of 100 vs 50 ohms and taking a stab at mine in the middle of those two.....then looking at your pic of 77 ohms, I think I'm very close. I don't think I will break back into it to make any adjustments, which would be minimal. It will be a few days before I can really get something behind and put it under a little stress.

I really appreciate all your help here! I couldn't have got this guage back in operational order without your assistance. Again thank you.

engine oil cooler temp problem on a 5210.
i replaced a leaking coolant hose on the oil cooler. prior to that the oil temp readings where normal. after.. the oil temp gauge went to red within 5 minutes, i checked the coolant flow- fine, no blockage. the coolant temp was just warm. checked the oil temp on the dip stick...only warm, not hot.. However. the back of the oil cooler case was very hot. what could be the cause and how do i fix it? Thanks.

Help me understand your problem a little better. I have attached a copy of the manual for the 5X10 tractors. Please look at the section Instrument (Dash) Panel. The 5X10 has a coolant temperature gauge and an oil pressure indicator and no oil temp gauge. I have also attached a link to JDparts.com I assuming your tractor is open station in looking at JDparts the oil cooler is where you put the oil filter on and only has oil lines to it and no coolant lines to it. If I am in error feel free to let me know.

Maybe you can take a picture of the hose you replaced. What was the color of the coolant green or some other color.
