So, an organization that I belong to is aiming to buy a used backhoe that they've found somewhere nearby. It's a 1990 Dynahoe 490, and the asking price is $10,000, with reason to believe that the seller will take as little as $7,000.

Having no additional knowledge or information about the machine, does this raise any red flags for anyone else? I believe that there has been verbal communication with the seller, indicating that it's likely not a scam, but for that price, I can't help but wonder what's wrong with this machine... Seems to me that it should go for about double what the guy's asking.

Just posting a reference picture of what a Dynahoe 490 looks like.

Parts and service may be an issue. A couple of years ago, I was somewhat interested in a Dynahoe that I found advertised (different model, though). I did a bit of research on it at the time, but memory is fuzzy now. I believe they went out of production quite a while ago. I don't know what the situation is for parts and support. I believe the engines were standard brands that you could get parts for. Other components may be the same way.

That 490 sure is one rugged looking beast!

If your organization includes a mechanic that is skilled at maintaining old, obsolete equipment, it may be worth a shot. Expect to spend a lot of time and energy in looking for parts, maybe having parts custom made. Otherwise, you should probably pass on it.

With all that said, I sure would like to have one of those in good working order around my place for a summer.:)

I poked around a bit more and found that this price is actually about average, although there weren't really many out there to compare against. The parts availability is a definite concern. It sounds to me like they're looking to buy a hot potato.
