Stumbled on a mint-condition 1986 JD 850 with only 34 hours - really looks brand new. Was kept in a garage for 20 years as a tax writeoff. Dealer wants $10,000. I would appreciate any thoughts regarding asking price or buying a 20-year old new tractor!

sounds really good...IF it's MFWD.

Ask the dealer if parts are available

Does it have a ROPS?

MFWD?

SCVs?

Power Steering?

Loader?

I ran a 850 for a couple of summers- it was a beast- nothing it wouldn't pull- however only 34 hours in 20 years is a bad thing for any engine

"however only 34 hours in 20 years is a bad thing for any engine "

Not necessarily...

However, I would change all fluids and filters (hopefully, the selling dealer has already done this). This would include draining the fuel system as well.

If it hasn't been started yet (I be very surprised if it hasn't), it might be worthwhile to rotate the crankshaft manually.

With 34 hours, the engine hasn't even been broken in. When you replace the oil, use whatever Deere recommends for a break in oil (probably a straight 30 Weight non-detergent Diesel rated oil). Then follow all break in instructions in the manual...or just use common sense breaking in what is essentially a brand new 20 year old tractor.
