1978 2040 battery question.

Well after some more troubleshooting I narrowed it down to the starter. Took it to a local electrical shop that rebuilds alternators and starters and he said it was bad. He took it apart and said something had broken that he couldn’t repair. Said it was the first time in 32 years he had one of these that he couldn’t rebuild. He’s hooking me up with a gear reduction starter so it should turn over easier. Should have it installed Saturday and I’ll report back. This forum has been super helpful!

Glad that you figured it out, I am surprised that you couldn’t get a rebuilt starter as there must be thousands of them out there. At least you will have it starting reliably again as the problem I had was annoying as it didn’t always happen. These old tractors are so simple that it doesn’t take too much troubleshooting, if you have fuel, battery power and the engine turns over it should start every time.
