1977 210. New starter knocking.

I acquired a new to me 1977 210. It would run but wouldn't start anymore. I bought it to put on my 31 tiller and leave it so I could keep the mower on my 110. Anyways, I put a new starter on it and now as I crank it, it seems to make a knocking noise until it fires up. Sort of like the teeth aren't meshing well with the flywheel. The starter looks exactly like the old starter as far as I can tell, same number of teeth etc. Do I need to try a different starter or is there some sort of way to adjust this?

Check for a loose flywheel.
