1965 International 504
I have 1965 504 with a Paulson loader. What weight of hydraulic fluid do I use and what is the amount in the reservoir? I think the weight currently in the tractor is too heavy as the loader and the bucket move extremely slow.

Tractor data says you have about 12 GPM flow.

Several things could cause slow, low engine rpm, wrong fluid, relief stuck open, 3pt lever not in neutral, return flow restricted, filters clogged, etc

Too see if the reliefs are working, tee a gage at the IN port of the FEL and tell us the pressure that the FEL can generate and the 3pt.

I appreciate your response. I am not familiar with where the relief is, the 3 pt lever not in neutral, where the filter is, what a tee gauge is, the IN port or the FEL etc. I guess I need a LOT of help. I'm actually into hot rods and know about cars but not tractors. I just use the tractor to move snow here in Nebraska. Please explain what/where these items are. Thanks, Rich

After rereading your response, it makes more sense. I was using the rear blade and the loader at the same time. I would raise the blade and then try to use the loader. Do I have to put the 3 pt lever in neutral to use the loader?
What position is the neutral lever? Also, where is the relief valve and filter? I could probably check both and the lever fairly easy.

It definitely does not do 12 GPM. I doubt if it was doing 1 or 2 GPM. :(

I think you are going to need a manual for your tractor.

If the 3pt lever is not in neutral, it will interfere with the FEL. The 3pt lever should not be at the top of travel. Lever should be at a point where the 3pt arm do not descend, and or not raise.

If the 3pt relief comes on, you have the lever to high.

Your hyd flow should be from your pump to FEL, and then to the 3pt, then to tank.

The FEL relief should be very close to the IN port of the FEL.

You really need a 3000 psi hyd gage to see if the pump is working correctly.

Here are some pics of a hyd gage setup.

You normally can not use the FEL and the 3pt at the same time, as the FEL being first in the series flow, will take all or most of the pump flow. Only use one at a time.

Tractor data did not say if your hyd system is open center or closed center, and that will make a difference.

It's pretty cold out today but when it's warmer, I'll do a little research. I had the rear blade in the up position when I was trying to raise the loader and it was super slow. I thought maybe the fluid is too thick in the reservoir ( I think it's same as the transmission and not knowing what the weight is) and now that it's cold, it was making it go slow. Thanks for the info.

Talk to your dealer or tractor service center and see what the correct fluid that should be used for your area this time of year.

Have you ever changed the filters or replaced the fluid?

No. I don't know where the filters are. I just bought the tractor last July and parked it waiting for snow which we got today. The rear blade works nice. I had a 54 Super MTA with no power steering and tricycle front for the last 29 years that I used to move the snow so the 504 is a nice treat.
